Helping Others Find Their Way: How to Add Missing Places to Google Maps (Best Practices & Tips)

Dear All,

One of the most impactful ways we contribute to Google Maps is by adding missing places. Whether it’s a new local coffee shop, a hidden park gem, or an essential service, keeping the map updated helps everyone in our community.

I’ve put together a quick guide and an easy-to-follow infographic to help you through the process, along with some best practices to ensure your contributions get approved and provide the best value.

How to Add a Missing Place: Step-by-Step

Here is the basic process:

  1. Start the Contribution: On your phone, tap the “Contribute” tab, then tap the “Add place” button.

  2. Fill in the Details: Accurate information is key. You are required to provide the Place Name, its Category (e.g., Restaurant, Park, etc.), and its exact Address (you can drop a pin for precision).

  3. Enhance with Details: A great contribution doesn’t stop at the basics. Be sure to add Helpful Photos (like the storefront or sign) and the current Opening Hours. This makes the listing much more useful to others.

  4. Review and Submit: Double-check all the information you’ve entered. Once everything is verified, hit Submit!

Do’s & Don’ts for Successful Map Editing

To help your edit get accepted and avoid issues, keep these best practices in mind:

:white_check_mark: BEST PRACTICES (What to Do)

  • Actual Business Names Only: Use the actual name of the business or place.

  • Be Category-Specific: Choose the most accurate category possible to help people find the right type of location.

  • Verify Location: Make sure the map pin is exactly where the place’s entrance is.

  • Quality Photos: Add clear, well-lit photos that clearly show the entrance or the official sign.

:cross_mark: WHAT TO AVOID (The Pitfalls)

  • No Private Residences: Never add private homes or residential addresses to the map.

  • Avoid Duplicates: Before adding, check to make sure the place isn’t already listed.

  • Clean Photos: Don’t use photos with large watermarks or that contain personal information.

  • No Keyword Stuffing: Don’t add descriptive keywords to the name field (e.g., use “Joe’s Cafe,” not “Joe’s Cafe Best Coffee Sandwiches Downtown”).

Let’s work together to make sure our local knowledge benefits everyone! Happy contributing:)

Great initiative and information @Manishhh . Even I also do the same like whenever I visit any place and when I search on the Google Maps by it’s name and when I find that it is not on Maps, then I add that places including it’s photos, videos and detailed written review in order to help other people

If anyone cares to read the rules for naming places this is your link:

Dear @AbhijeetUniyal Thank you! That is exactly what it’s all about. Taking the time to add those missing details, photos, and reviews is so helpful for everyone. Keep up the great work:)

this is really helpful, Thank you @MortenCopenhagen

You have nicely explained the steps; it’s very helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience @Manishhh

Very useful tips for adding places. I would like to add that we must only update the Name, Address and Category to start with. Many people tend to add phone number and website which more often than not creates a hindrance for approvals. Thanks for sharing @Manishhh

Great post, @Manishhh .
If I can add a few notes:

  • fully agree with @Ssiddharth2000 about starting with only the basic required elements: name, category, address, pin position, and to add the additional information when the edit has been approved. The reason is that, if one of the elements is not verified, the whole edit will be rejected.
  • avoid adding things that don’t need to be in Google Maps. A couple of them that are always present in my mind are Fire Extinguishers and Tombs (of Dad, Mom, uncle, and so on).

Thank you @PrasadVR, glad you find the post useful:)

Thank you @Ssiddharth2000 for adding this very important point:)

Great, helpful post @Manishhh , thank you for putting it together.

One remark, though, about the wording you use for the name of the place. You mention 'official name’s, but that is a bit confusing. People might think you mean the name of the business as it is officially registered with the local chamber of commerce, e.g. “Flowershop Ltd” or “Consultants Inc”. That is definitely not what should happen. As mentioned in the official documentation that @MortenCopenhagen already linked to: it should be the name of the business as it is shown in the real world, e.g. on the storefront or letterhead.

That makes complete sense @JanVanHaver , let me edit and make changes in the writeup. Thank you for your input and appreciation:)

Very helpful post, my dear @Manishhh
The post has invited attention and appreciation from senior LGs and Connect Moderators… Great :+1:
