Update: The form mentioned below for sharing authoritative sources of information during times of crisis is no longer accepting responses.
Every year, nearly 160 million people globally are affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires. A crisis can happen at anytime, anywhere in the world, and can drastically disrupt people’s daily lives. In worst cases, natural disasters cause severe devastation to entire communities.
During a crisis, people need quick access to important information to help them stay safe and informed. As a Local Guide, you can help members of your community when a crisis hits by sharing critical information on Google Maps.
For the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a few articles on Connect that explain meaningful ways you can contribute during a crisis. We’ll walk you through reporting and confirming suspected road closures on the map to help others navigate out of a crisis,.
In the meantime, please fill outthis formto help us identify authoritative sources of information during times of crisis in your area.
Google Maps is committed to supporting people during times of need. We’ve deeply integrated SOS Alerts into Maps, allowing us to provide a set of features that activate during times of natural or man-made crisis. SOS Alerts provide key crisis information and emergency resources in one place and can be easily shared on social media or messaging apps. We’ve also integrated location sharing into SOS Alerts so that so you can let loved ones know that you’re safe during a crisis.
We hope the articles we share on Connect will help you learn about ways you can make an impact during a crisis, but please always consider your personal safety and the safety of others first. Your priority during a crisis should always be to get yourself and loved ones out of danger.
This is an excellent initiative @AriMar : timeliness in the event of a crisis is a priority, such as giving the right support to avoid losing precious time!
I proceed immediately with the compilation of the questionnaire and I hope that many LocalGuides do the same in the same way!
Much needed feature, currently in our country (Bangladesh) flood, flash floods are happening right now. Lots of road got damaged or gone under water. So, this feature will helps a lot. Looking forward to this.
This is very needed thing and really help people in crisis.
We did such try in Iran Local Guides community, for example we created this map which is safe areas of city during earthquake or this one which shows blood donation stations in Iran.
@AriMar great initiative. It’ll definitely help people in crisis. And big thanks to Google maps team for sending an alert as well as highlighting affected area.
unfortunately sharing real time location is unavailable in Iran with no reason. Although it can help thousands of users during crisis. You may know we had many crisis in Iran. Since three months ago we had many natural disasters like flood in vast area, earthquake (last large one was yesterday), jungle fire and many others.
That is caring, I felt a need for something like this in the past few months when we had floods in South Africa. I will be filling the forms. Thanks to the local guide team as a whole and @AriMar for sharing with us.
** @AriMar Very Helpful initiative, I will fill out this form to help identify authoritative sources of information during times of crisis in our area…**
