I’ve submitted requests for two interstate errors that affect my commute. I’m including both here because they are similar. The first is more troublesome: https://goo.gl/maps/kqZ9VJ7pFN32ajk19. This is the exit from I-75N to I-575N. Although it is signed as Exit 268 and is an exit from the interstate, Maps treats it as a continuation of state road 5. The written and voiced instructions even say something like, “keep right to stay on GA-5.” This causes problems because a keep right instruction doesn’t generate the standard interstate exit warnings such as, “In 2 miles, exit right…” Instead, approximately 1/2 mile before the exit, it suddenly says, “Keep right to stay on GA-5.” If someone weren’t actively watching the directions on their phone, it is possible to be 3 or 4 lanes away from the exit at the 1/2-mile point. It’s unsafe and nearly impossible to make it over to the exit in 1/2 mile when traveling at 70mph. Now that I’ve lived here awhile I know to look for it (sometimes staying on I75 is faster for me, sometimes exiting at I575). However, since directions are primarily for people who don’t already know where they’re going, it would be helpful to fix this exit so that it’s treated as a proper interstate exit and not a “keep right.”
A similar issue exists here: https://goo.gl/maps/jCShhdSK212BYMHd8. The signs mark this as exit “242 / I85S / Domestic / Montgomery.” However, because the previous road segment is both I75 and I85, the instructions are to “keep right to stay on I85S…” Again this instruction is given at about 1/2 mile with no previous warning.
I’ve submitted multiple edits for both locations that were marked as not able to be verified. I tried to explain the issue in as plain English as possible, but apparently I’m not making it past the initial filters or moderators. Is there something else I can try to get these edits viewed by the correct team?
The overhead direction signs happen to be so apparent in the US, I believe, most of the users would not be relying on the voice guidance. One would be using the map only to find the fastest route or get a warning about any traffic snarl!
Nevertheless, instead of suggesting an edit, I favour using the option - Send feedback → Wrong information -->Then click the road segment & then in the note describe the problem including the incorrect vice navigation.
Thanks for the quick reply, @C_T . I’ve tried that, and it’s failed with the same result. I think users who don’t know where they’re going rely on maps to provide them with directions. If a person didn’t notice they had an exit coming up because there was no warning, they wouldn’t be looking for overhead signs. I live here, and I rely on maps to tell me whether it’s quicker to take I75 or I575 at this point. Now that I know to look for it, I check miles before I575 to see if it’s recommending I exit. However, that’s different than everywhere else in the country, where Google gives me a 2 mile notice for an interstate exit. Thanks again for the reply.
Just to summarize quickly, for the first one, your suggestion is to correct the navigation when drivers about to go through the Exit 268, the navigation should warn from a greater distance (as per your example “In 2 miles, exit right…”) to alert about the changing from I-75N to I-575N road, correct?
For the second one (similarly to the one above), before crossing the Exit 242, the suggestion would also be warning drivers approximately from 2 miles before reaching the exit.
Do feel free to correct my thoughts, as for the moment I will also take a look on my end.
@sonnyNg , Thank you for the reply. I think the overall issue is that these exits aren’t correctly classified as exits. The written and voice instructions both state “keep right to stay on…” instead of directing drivers to take the exit #268. That incorrect classification causes all of the normal exit prompts to be suppressed. I try to put myself in the shoes of someone not familiar with the area. They come up to this 6-lane part of I-75, they haven’t been warned of an upcoming exit, and suddenly they’re told to keep right to stay on Georgia 5, which isn’t the primary choice on the big green signs. If the exit were classified as an exit instead of a road continuation, I think the problem would take care of itself. Then the screen and voice prompts would likely show “Exit #268, I575N, GA-5N, Canton” instead of just “keep right.”
It’s similar in the second example, although even an unfamiliar user is more likely to know they are on both I75 and I85 prior to the exit. Still, I can say as someone who’s not always familiar with an area, it’s nice to get “Exit 242, I85S, Domestic / Montgomery” instead of “Keep right to stay on I85S.”
