Hello my name is James and I am new all this Google Local Guide business.
Althou, I work a lot of hours with my retail job, I do enjoy exporing my new home and surrounding areas here in Northern Alabama and beyond.
Any local guides near me, even if you are up in Tennessee, or the Carolina’s?
I am an excellent cook, love to take road trips to no where and greatly enjoy meeting new people in my travels! I also am an audiophile, and love Modern Art.
Hey everyone, I am kind of new to local guides. I have ramped up quite a few points already but recently moved to Huntsville. I am interested in kicking this off here, since there doesn’t seem to be much activity as of now.
I am a very new local guide and have been busy cleaning up the South Huntsville map. The economy is picking up (finally) and construction and new business along with the Parkway upgrades have created a large amount of obsolete data that will take a lot of time and effort before the map in this area becomes reasonably accurate. I’m up to the challenge since accurate updates will allow more investors to make the choice to grow the South Huntsville economy even further. It has been stagnant for too long.
I am the owner of Huntsville Computer Services, and have been in business for 10 years. Feel free to visit my shop anytime, but you will know that I am there when the white HCS truck is parked in front of the office. I often work overnight so I can get things done without interruption (feel free to interrupt late at night or early in the morning, but call me first so I know to expect you). One of my current efforts is the startup of a microelectronics lab. It seems that if you get a $600 phone wet, every phone repair shop in town will replace all the cables, the screen and the battery, charge $200 for the “service” and tell you that it can’t be fixed. It is my intent to provide a service that will fix circuit boards of all types, and not charge the client if they are not working properly when we are done. I like to tell folks that we have the most high-tech trailer in Huntsville and I love to show it off.
I hope that my pride in my team and capabilities does not seem like advertising… I just enjoy the heck out of what I do.
.
Fixing things is very satisfying… isn’t that why we are here?
I have given up on correcting phone number changes that hackers have been making in Huntsville lately. It is time consuming to verify, and the 20 hacking accounts that I have reported to Google some time ago are still busy making changes around the world.
I wish I could do something about it because it is hurting local businesses, but there are too many of them and Google does not seem to care.
If anyone has any ideas on this, I would like to hear them.
I wish instead of a local guide by city that Google would do area. I come to Huntsville constantly but live north of Scottsboro. I like to share wherever I go in Northeast Alabama. The community would be larger and more active. Scottsboro can’t sustain a local guide community.
I do agree about the Huntsville scam phone numbers, I get calls frequently. I have relatives in Huntsville and you just never know so I answer the calls and then block numbers.
I have been thinking about getting permission from the Space and Rocket Center to do a Street View of the Rocket Park behind the main museum. Once written permission is obtained, we should be able to get a loner 360 camera from Google. https://www.google.com/streetview/trekker/
RickN, just checked out the link and that is an impressive camera. Would love to use it in other areas around town, or maybe even the Smokey Mountains.
I have found an app that will allow me to make 360 captures using the panorama function on my smartphone. I will be checking its compatibility with the google streetview app, but I expect that if there is a problem, a bit of tweeking will fix it. It will be easier to get permission from the Space and Rocket Center if I have something to show them. Time is another factor, the economy has started to grow again, so I have become a bit busy. Even so, I really want to do this.
wondering if you were able to follow through on your plans to StreetView the S&RC? If so were you able to gain access to a cam from Google? Thinking of doing the same for several historic places in Birmingham.
No, I have not done anything yet. While researching using my phone to scan in 3D objects for my printer, I did find more phone apps that can make streetview type pictures. I have not done any tests yet, but I will after I get the 3D object scan working to my satisfaction. That will actually help since I can then make parts for a rotating platform from clay, scan them in then print them on my 3D printer in ABS plastic.
