Have you ever heard of Fried Pizza? What's the most popular street food in your area?

Pizza as we know it today is an Italian invention (although many would argue that other ancient cultures created similar dishes), but what about Fried Pizza? Has anyone heard of it?

Well, this is one of the most popular street foods in my home region, the southern part of Rio de Janeiro State.

The pizza frita is a popular snack from Volta Redonda and Barra Mansa, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s similar to a pastel but with a thicker dough. The traditional filling is a combination of ham, cheese, and oregano, which gives it a pizza-like flavor. However, you can find other fillings too, like chicken, ground beef, or even vegetarian options. It’s deep-fried until golden, resulting in a crispy yet slightly soft pocket of deliciousness. You could think of it as a cross between a fried empanada and a calzone, but with its own unique Brazilian twist.

This dish is so traditional that the City Council of Volta Redonda established June 17th as “Fried Pizza Day.” I hadn’t visited my hometown in a while, so when I was there for the holiday season, I made sure to enjoy plenty of pizza frita.

By the way, I noticed that one of my favorite places to eat pizza frita wasn’t listed on Google, so I added it myself. I was also the first to leave a review and upload photos of the spot. It’s a small food trailer, but since it has a fixed location and proper signage, it qualifies to be added to Google Maps by us Local Guides.

And you? What’s the most traditional street food in your area? Have you added it to Maps yet?
