Hatthikuchchi Viharaya - (BC 307-267)

This temple build by the King Devanampiyathissa, One of the oldest temple in the country. Later on it was forgotten by the people and was covered by the jungle.

It has being taken to consideration that this location was the only location that the King Sirisangabo (BC 251-253) that he offered his own head to the peasants. Which was a great incident that happen at the time, in the story it says that the peasant walked half a day from Anuradhapura towards the south where he met former King Sirisangabo. Distant between Hatthikuchchi to Anuradhapura is 38.5Km.

The name “Hatthikuchchi” is pali word means “Elephant Stamoch”.

There is this About to fall Large Rock, which believe to be kept by the Giant to dropped on to the unexpected enemy around time of kings.
