Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara - The Golden Temple in Amritsar

Visiting the Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara in Amritsar is a lifetime event. The Gurudwara is the place of worship for the followers of the Sikh religion and also for the Hindus. It is also popularly known as The Golden Temple since the entire temple is covered with pure Gold plating by the affluent and progressive Sikh community who are concentrated in the state of Punjab in India but also spread out all over India and in every corner of the world, more prominently in Canada and the UK.

The Gurudwara is open 24x7 for Darshan and is typically maintained in a super clean condition thanks to the volunteering by the devotees. I reached the Gurudwara late in the evening after 7:30 last week and the atmosphere was supercharged with the pond lit with the golden reflection and Gurubani being chanted over loudspeakers. The Gurudwara looks equally spiritually enchanting during the day time as well as seen in the collage above.

There is a grand entrance to the Gurudwara complex and after entering through it I realized that there are 3 more that make the entire area a bit symmetric. The queue for Darshan could be slow-moving in the evening at the time of the grand recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib that is the central religious text of Sikhism.

There is a free shoe storage facility and the market outside has been converted into a walking and shopping plaza with a well-paved tiled floor and no entry for any type of vehicles.

Monument Tips:
• Do no necessarily stop when devotees in front of you stop; They tend to take Darshan at several places, especially at the main entrance at first sight of the Golden Temple.
• Do not be tempted to take photos though it is allowed within the temple premises until you have first had the Darshan. All photo opportunities exist on the return path.
• Do not park your vehicles in the Gurudwara parking since a lot of walking will be involved. Instead, leave your vehicle at the hotel and take the dirt-cheap public transport available in Amritsar that drops you very close to the temple.
• Make sure you make note of the hotel name, address, and phone number before leaving for the temple since you have to return back as well.

It is worth reiterating that India is the origin and home to 4 major religions of the world- Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhism.
Takht Sri Akal Sahib in Amritsar is one of the 5 Takhts meaning the Sikh imperial thrones. The Sikhs recognize five places as Takhts listed below:

  1. Akal Takht at Amritsar.
  2. Takht Keshgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib.
  3. Takht Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo.
  4. Takht Patna Sahib in Bihar.
  5. Takht Hazur Sahib at Nanded in Maharashtra.

Have you been to a Gurudwara or place of worship with significant religious importance? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.

Until then… Happy Guiding ?

Hello @TusharSuradkar

Incredible India    Thanks for taking me down the memory lane to my Amritsar-Manali travel diaries. I am lucky to have visited this temple twice

Awesome post alongwith classic captures buddy.

Would like to add some more points:

• Don’t forget to cover your head with scarf or handkerchief so that energy entering the body gets trapped in the head, as our forehead contains Agya Chakra which stores energy entering the body.

• The 4 entrances of the Golden Temple, symbolise that it is open to any religion and free for all.

• Sikhs also provide Langar - food distribution for all visiting the temple, with an intention that no one stays hungry or thirsty.

• Must mention is the yummy Kada prasad, a flour-based sugary sweet made in pure ghee that they offer to you after the Darshan is complete.

yes, yes, yes and yes @MayuriKubal those 4 points should definitely be kept in mind about the Golden temple; a good listing that I had almost completely forgotten about :innocent:

I do remember your very early post about Manali but wasn’t aware you traveled to Amritsar as well. I made sure to visit it once in the dark in the late evening though did not see anyone floating Diyas in the pond as told :disappointed_relieved:

And then and also again in the daytime the next morning.

Hello @RosyKohli , It is nice to know that you have visited Amritsar and Patna Sahib as well, the latter is a bit far off from Delhi.

Your experience with the hotel was worrisome and in my case, I did the same mistake.

The hotel person came running out of the hotel when we left for the Golden Temple and voluntarily gave the hotel visiting card and still I did not realize why he was giving it. It was only while returning back after the Darshan that I realized why he gave the card and saved some troubling time for me and my family.

It is very fortunate that you had a policeman to help

Also wasn’t aware of such wonderful staying facilities in Amritsar and also Jalianwala bagh was closed for repairs so will have to go back there once again

Definitely, the mesmerizing views and scenic beauty of golden temple in night and day time leaves you spell-bound @TusharSuradkar Maybe, due to pandemic, there would have been less people and hence, no diyas floating in water.

Great to know that you are planning to visit as far as Amritsar, in which case you may find the nearby places that I have listed also useful.

How do you travel from so far @VenuGopal25 by train, air, or car?

Due to low budget, I will come by train.
