Happy New Year and a summary of 2020...

2020 was a year of ups and downs, that’s for sure. Since we Aussies have the distinction of living in nearly everyone else’s future I thought I might take the liberty on behalf of all Local Guides to wish each other a happy new year as we transition from 2020 to 2021. Hopefully things will become better. I know some of us are in lock down, others are not. I personally will be having a quiet one at home with my immediate family seeing the some of the others tomorrow on the first day of 2021. I’m going to summarise this year with a table of ups and downs… perhaps you might like to talk about your own in the comments below.

2020 Downers
A pandemic shattered the way we live and disrupted our lives.
Racial tensions bubbled over in many places with riots and violence.
World politics took a turn for the worse with popularists leading the way into darkness in many places.
Many people lost loved ones to the pandemic.
Many people lost their jobs to the pandemic.
The world economy is hurting.
We couldn’t go outside.
Connect Live 2020 was cancelled.
2020 Uppers
My family bought a new house to set us up for the future.
SciFi came true and we got to learn how to live virtually.
I organised and hosted a series of 10 virtual photography workshops for Local Guides attended by hundreds.
I got featured in an email to millions of Local Guides which helped raise my profile here and outside Local Guides - I actually got recognised in a restaurant yesterday.
Point Click Guide Photography Videocast (Vodcast? Podcast?) was launched on YouTube.
Community Live 2020 was organised and hosted by the volunteer Connect Moderators for you all.
The Guiding Stars program was launched.
I was named a 2020 Guiding Star :).
All of my family are still well, the old ones are still with us.
Two vaccines proved safe and effective and are now beginning to roll out around the world.
Acceptance has become the word of the year, we’ve learned about each other’s cultures and lives and we’ve learned that to be different is perfectly ok.

When I look at my 2020 over all, it wasn’t amazing but it also wasn’t awful and there were certainly a lot of highlights. I made a lot of new friends all around the world through my workshop and podcast and am continually amazed at the degree of interaction that goes on there. I’ve had a fun year moderating Local Guides Connect and look forward to rebuilding my local Local Guides community in real life as we head into normalcy over the coming couple of years especially looking forward to international travel which I do not expect to reopen widely until 2022/2023.

So as we gather on the cusp of the end of 2020, I hope to see you next year alive, happy and healthy. Happy new year everyone.

Paul

Hello @Mikex2

Welcome to Connect and congratulations on your first post here.

Appreciate your idea of treating yourself with candy apple.

Can you share a recipe of that?

More importantly, can you tell something about you?

You can add that as a comment in the introduce yourself post.

Hello Local Guides!

This year is almost over and I would like to share that this is one of my favorite seasons becase I love the christmas decorations, the sparkling lights and colors at night I think they’re so beautiful, seeing them bring me happiness and joy, I had the opportunity to visit NYC last year and I was amazed with the decorations in Brooklyn they really do an amazing job. This place is famous for the amazing christmas decorations.

This second picture is The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in 2019 that was huge and beautiful, by the way an interesting fact about the tree…

The first Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was held for the very first time in1933! more than eight decades!

This is also a picture of Ice skating at The Rink at Rockefeller Center (taken in 2019) that is a very popular attraction in the winter.

Finally I would like to wish a Happy New Year 2021 filled with lots of joy, happiness, good health and new beginnings!

Cheers. :woman_singer: :clinking_glasses:

What a nice post @PaulPavlinovich

The way you highlighted 2020 in general (feels like reading a yearly recap from a news  ) and your experiences.

Our hopes are definitely the same. Wishing everything will be better in 2021 and slowly we could go back to normal life as it used to be.

I wish you have a nice New Year in your new wam home

Paul, thank you so much for being an amazing Local Guide and photography mentor to us this year.

happy New Year! This year was a year in which our lives were significantly changed by the coronavirus. I think that the situation will continue to be unsuspecting next year. We look forward to seeing you again and would like to grow with Google Maps.

Since you are also new here on Connect let me guide you through Your guide to Connect to make yourself comfortable and understand how to best use Connect. If you need any help you can instead refer to our Help Desk.

And finally you might want to introduce yourself to the community and the other Local Guides by writing something about yourself in our monthly introduction post Introduce Yourself December 2020.

(Caption: Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.)

2020 was a very disappointing year. Except for the first three months, we spent almost the whole year with COVID-19. Many have also experienced corona, most recovered, some even lost loved ones. We were all mentally prepared that it would be better if 2020 was over soon. We thought that with the coming of the New Year, Corona would be gone. But the global epidemic is still with us. Because of this pandemic, we have faced many difficulties and also learned many new things and habits. Corona has taught us purity and hygiene which has brought us awareness for health. We do regular Yoga-Pranayama and exercise.

Many things changed in 2020, but one thing remained the same: the passion and dedication of the Local Guides community. A large part of our Local Guide community has been able to recover from this epidemic. Organizing regular meet-ups allows us to meet new people and learn new things from them. And we have come closer to each other. Compared to the last few years, we have organized more meet ups this year. We have stepped forward to help the small businesses around us. We have become more aware of accessibility and have increased our contributions to Google maps. I hope that in the next year we will continue to contribute in the same way.

We don’t know how long this pandemic will be with us. But with the advent of vaccines and due to our awareness there will be less than necessary. We have learned to live with pandemic for the last one year. May the next 2021 be better than this year, Corona’s strength decreases, and our health gradually increases…

See you in 2021…
