Happy Leap Year 2024 everyone. Leap year is a special year that is one day longer than a normal year, or one month in the case of a lunar year, to conform to the astrological year. Seasonal changes and the recurrence of other cosmic events depend on the astrological year, or the time it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun once. Its duration is about 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes 47 seconds, while the year in the traditional Gregorian calendar is calculated in 365 days. Thus every year about six hours of time is left out of calculation and it is equal to about one day in four years. To make up for this shortfall, the year is calculated with 366 days every four years. In Gregorian calendar, this extra 1 day is added once every four years in the month of February and in the month of Falgun according to the Bengali calendar. So February and Falgun months are 29 and 30 days respectively in leap year. Eg: Now 2024 is a leap year and its month of February is 29 days.
The revised and reckoned versions of the Islamic calendar do not have regular leap days, although both contain 29 or 30 days of the lunar month, usually in alternating order. The tabular Islamic calendar, used by Islamic astronomers in the Middle Ages and still used by Muslims, adds a regular leap day to the last month of the lunar year out of 11 years of a 30-year cycle. This extra day is found at the end of the last month, Dhu-l-Hija, which is the month of Hajj.
