International Cat Day is celebrated on August 8 to recognize one of the world’s most popular pets. Humans have loved cats since around the time of ancient Egypt. During that time period, cats were considered sacred and they were even mummified in order to keep the pet’s owner company in the afterlife. Ultimately, people around the world came to adopt these furry creatures as pets. It’s estimated that there are about 600 million cats in the world today!
To celebrate International Cat Day, we are sharing these amazing photos of cats. We love these photos because they’re taken in natural light and feature cats doing what they do best: sleeping, looking for a bite to eat, or playing!
Check out these great photos of cats taken by Local Guides around the world and shared on Google Maps.
Hi @Christina-NYC What cute cats😻!! As you may know, our country likes cats specially.
Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, which is most popular with foreign tourists, has a god of fox, but there are actually many stray cats. In order to meet them, climb further than Senbon Torii:shinto_shrine: He is familiar with tourists. For some reason, when we hold the camera, he looks at us!
Also, I grew up in a town in Malaysia called Kuching. The local name for a cat is ‘kucing’ so if you’re in Kuching, you will see that we’ve adopted the cat as the city’s mascot and you’ll see pictures of cats everywhere! We have a famous city center cat statue landmark and we even have a cat museum!!
To all cat lovers out there, go say ‘meow’ to the nearest cat and give it some love!
Mahahual is a former fishing village in Quintana Roo, Mexico. With a population of 920 nine years ago, Mahahual is now being developed as a tourist center. This cat is owned by one of the water parks there and “guards” the entrance. Visitors (such as me) liked taking pictures of it on the burlap sack. Picture from January 2019.
I love cats! Wonderful pictures @Christina-NYC I have two, a male named Nathan, he’s 4 years old white and deaf cat, my sunshine, is the most sweet cat of the world (at least of my world?).
Thank you very much for showing us your lovely cat! Happy International Cat Day to you and to all the worldwide cat lovers! I personally adore these amazing creatures!
Please note that I have merged your post with the ongoing Happy International Cat Day! thread where other Local Guides also shared photos of their beautiful pets.
But I was surprised and made to admire most of all --the kind and friendly attitudeto cats in the city. They can be seen everywhere-on the streets,in cafes,in parks.People love them, cats always have food and drink near them.Sometimes you can find houses for them, where the whole cats family lives.Sometimes they lie on the carpets near the house.
As cats lover,I was shocked by the story of Cat lying on the embankment and looking at the sea,he was a universal favourite of Istanbul.
