happy in Havana- back to the 1960s in Cuba!

Last year I had the privilege to visit HAVANA in Cuba

I wanted to see it before it inevitably becomes “westernised” and adds McDonalds and Starbucks to satisfy the hoards of American tourists coming from the cruise ships.

We had only 3 days so wanted to make the best of it so hired a local guide through the “support the Cuban people” website. He was a terrific guy- very proud of his country and passionate about it, I was surprised at the number of European places he had travelled, and was shocked when I asked him where he would like to live in the world and he replied Cuba! He has no intention of leaving his Island despite his young age. He disagreed that it would soon be covered in American chain stores, said it would never happen. He could be right, the communist system has been in place for over 50 years and the people, although having very little, seem quite content. They are not aggressive or persistent, and are mainly friendly and helpful- but you DO need a good level of Spanish so here is the place to practice! And don’t rely on your Smartphone and Google translate- they have very limited access here via internet cafes, but it’s not cheap and your mobile data probably won’t connect, but it may have changed by now, check with your carrier before you go…

The whole place is a wonderful throwback to a time now past. Its seems rooted in the 1960s. Little traffic, no congestion or parking problems. Where they do have issues is in keeping their ancient vehicles running. They may have the body of a 61 Buick or Chevy but underneath may be diesel from a truck or whatever they could lay they hands on!

You can buy a ride in these cars, it’s not cheap, but it’s part of the Cuban heritage so has to be done. Also you are contributing directly to the local economy, i.e. the driver!!

The architecture is beautiful. Some ex government buildings have been sympathetically restored in bright Caribbean colours and 2019 is Cuba’s 500th anniversary so UNESCO is renovating key buildings as a world heritage site.

Eating out is challenging- don’t expect to find everything listed on the menu- you may have to resort to the staple diet of chicken, beans and rice.

Then there’s the music- it’s fabulous-like the Buena vista social club but with more energy- and its everywhere. Do support the musicians and show your appreciation.

Beware of the currency- there are two types- one for the locals and the Tourist CUC. A favourite scam is try to get you to swap- don’t- the local currency is worth much less!!- (many don’t accept US $ )

But do go before it becomes part of the 21st century .it’s fun and its different!
