Hamburg: a weekend getaway plan

I have been 3 times to Hamburg, but only one as a tourist, which is where I got most of these photos. The other two times I was focused into some bureaucratic stuff, so not much to report about… That one time as a tourist was a weekend getaway, so I would dare say that you can get a great scope of the city within that timeframe. This is what I found to be more interesting about this city as well as some warnings taken from my perspective as a visitor:

· The weather:

  • Rain: Try to match your trip with the sunny days, because in Hamburg when it rains, it rains. In my case we almost missed a full afternoon/night because it was if not impossible, quite uncomfortable to go out and explore. And needless to say, that taking a phone or a camera to snap some photos was a no-go!

  • Heat: But be careful not to go in the peak of the summer days. Hamburg get’s seriously hot. So beware of the temperature!

· Take the Harbour cruise:

If you are like me, it will open your eyes to a new dimension of business. You will appreciate better the imported stuff you consume and use, and will be in touch with the magnificent system behind them. Then walk around that area, let yourself feel the smells and noises, which can become overwhelming at times.

· Go to the Speicherstadt:

It was sad for me that the afternoon I had reserved to discover this are was that rainy one I mentioned before. So I was not able to walk and discover this world heritage site as much as I would have loved to. Plan in advance being able to walk there, get lost among the canals, notice the similarity of the buildings as well as their peculiarities of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

· Commercial side & Shopping in Hamburg:

Even if you don’t really buy anything, take some time to walk the old-modern side of town, an example is the area around the station “Jungfernstieg”, where you find a big lake to shill and get the feeling of the streets: the bikers, the speed of the locals and their rhythm. It is cool how this part of the city seems to have been built around it. There are many luxury shops and, in the near of one of its corners, you will find a mall called “Europa Passage” with everything you need, from photo studio to a supermarket. On one of my trips, In the last one I bought the fresh bottles of water, as they got warm very soon due to the extremely hot temperatures.

· Visit the St. Pauli & the Red Light District area:

Go to this are so you can appreciate how much it changes when the sun goes down. And while in there, take a quick stop into the awesome bar called Strand Pauli, which recreates a beach in the city center.

And when the night comes, go back out and explore the rise of the Red Light District. Go to the Davidwache stration and then get lost around the sex shops and sinner side of town.

Hans Hummels

· While in town, try to find one of the Hans Hummels, a working class pop icon made into colourful statues. And don’t forget to take a photo with him!

I guess that with that small guide, you can get a very good idea of what Hamburg has to offer. Is that all there is? Of course not! But it will make for an unforgettable, super photogenic and culturally rich weekend getaway.

This post is inspired by a question made by @PoliMC, so thanks for giving me the idea.

Hi @Marichams ,

Thank you so much for creating this incredible post!

Now we know what to do and where to go in Hamburg when we visit it for a weekend. Your photos are fantastic!

I’ve heard about the weather that it’s changing a lot but I hope when I visit it, it would be nice!

If you have more material for the other towns that you visited in Germany, it would be also a great idea to create such posts.

Thanks again!

Hi @PoliMC , it was a great idea you gave me and I took it as a challenge! The weather was a topic in a two of the three times I had been there, akeays manageable, yet the rain which chopped some plans and didn’t allow me to photograph as I would like to…

Thanks for the photo compliment, have you noticed that I have nested the content so you can learn more (in my other posts) if you want to?

Making such a posts from other places would also be challenging specially because I’m usually looking at the details, more than a structured plan.

Hi @Marichams ,

Yeah, I understand you, it’s not nice when it’s raining because the photos are very dark. I’ve noticed it yeah, it’s really nice thanks!

I can see that you love the details in the posts and that’s great because you create wonderful posts. Looking forward to see your posts again!

My major problem is not that the photos are dark, as much as the camera getting wet, @PoliMC . The dark photos can be fixed, the damage camera… Not that much! :upside_down_face:

Dear Marichams,

thank you for all the great impressions and photos you have gathered from my hometown.

For me it is always interesting to see Hamburg through the eyes of a person who was not born and raised in Hamburg.

Feel free to check my posts for more suggestions. Your way through the city has inspired me to new ways.

I can recommend you, for example, the “market street - Marktstraße” or the many “flea markets - Flohmärkte” that take place at various locations in Hamburg on the weekends.

At the Landungsbrücken the ship with the number 62, which you can use with a day ticket of public transport drives. And so on.

Best wishes your Harald from Hamburg

Hi @Asixtyplus and thanks for your comment! It is nice to see that my plan seems to make sense for a real “local” guide, since I am just posting as a visitor. I am sadly not there any longer, so your tips will be saved for the next time I visit Hamburg. I guess you knew everything I found out and wrote about, or where you able to re-connect with anything?

Hi @TorM ,

To be honest: I felt in love with the world! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Like I wrote from Hamburg I could write about many, many places, because I have decided to try to discover what’s special everywhere I go, to document it and spread the word. First as a hobby and now, I am even trying to make it my job, with my next entrepreneurial move.

About your country, I need to recognise that (contrary to what many immigrants seem to experience) Germany was very welcoming to me. Everyone was always nice and helpful. I never had any problem of any nature and while at first some might have given a little “what’s up with this lady” kind of look, as soon as we had the chance to talk a little bit, it all faded. Germans were quite tolerant with my poor language skills and those who did not made the effort to communicate in English, were always eager to understand what I meant or even help me improve. @ClaudiaWagner was one of those trying to make me understand some of my grammatical mistakes and always encouraging me to talk in German.

I did not enjoyed the weather though, and undoubtedly I did miss the warmth of my Caribbean people. It was funny because meany times I went for a hug or a kiss in the cheeks while Germans went for a hand shake, which cause many funny moments that ended up breaking the ice. I can now tell you that I have a winner handshake so I was trained for closing a good business! :upside_down_face:
