Big Island Tips: If you can get a rental car, the Costco is next to the Kona airport to get gas. Prices are the same as the Mainland. So if you want to buy any big-ticket items, Hawaii tax is like 4%! If you are staying at a condo, stock up at Costco.
The drive from Kona to the Volcano and back makes a LONG day! Definitely drive to see the Volcano and stay in Hilo or on that side of the island if you can. Here is my Big Island Fun list if you need more ideas.
