Gurudwara Nanaksar - Largest Sikh Place of Worship in Delhi

Gurudwara Nanaksar located in Rajender Nagar is one of the largest and most decorated places of worship in Delhi. The word is made of two parts:

  1. Nanak - Refers to Guru Nanak Dev the founder of the Sikh religious sect.
  2. Sar - means both
    a. Taking a bath, and
    b. The summary of teachings.

In this Gurudwara, devotees can take a bath in the summary of the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev, hence the name Gurudwara Nanaksar. Nanaksar is also a place in the Punjab region of India where Baba Nand Singh practiced prolonged meditations and had visions of Guru Nanak, Guru Har Krishan, and Guru Gobind Singh and hence he started the movement of Nanaksar. This Gurudwara also upholds the spirit of the Nanaksar movement.

Also known as Pahadi Wala Gurdwara since it is located on a large boulder that also looks like a small hillock and hence I could spot it from far away by tall flagpoles bearing the Nishan Sahib or the Sikh flag. The approach is a bit sloped as seen in the photo below.

The west-side gate is also nicely decorated and appears to be one of the main entrances.

The gate on the other side also looks similar and is nicely decorated.

This is a corner view of the Gurudwara and the entire premises are well-paved with smooth and cool marble tiles with decorative patterns.

Inside on the right side is a huge shoe stand with 8 chairs for comfort.

The toilets/washrooms are also clean, hygienic, and accessible.

The Deewan hall is large enough to accommodate 5000 people at a time.

Sukhmani Sahib is at 1:30 am - Prayer of Peace and joy, a set of 192 stanzas of 10 hymns each.
Asa Di Vaar is at 3:00 am - Melodious Songs of praise
Shabad Kirtan till 6:30 - Sacred recitation of devotion.

Most people think that since there is no statue or any symbol inside a Gurudwara, the Guru Granth Sahib or the holy book is the central devotional icon. That is not true. It is not the book, paper, ink, binding, or cover which is considered as the Guru. It is the Shabad, the sacred songs of Gurbani, and the enlightening emanating brilliance and the vibes that are sacred.

The entrance gate has majestic elephant statues on both sides one of which can be seen in the collage below.

In the center of the collage below is the Langar hall where free food is distributed for everyone at fixed timings every day. People can also donate food here but money is not accepted. On the backside of the Gurudwara is a huge space with a lot of apartments and rooms for pilgrims to stay as seen in the collage above.

I found this place of worship to be very well managed and maintained, blessed with a calm and spiritual place. I always love to visit to get blessings and feel good and positive vibes.

Have you visited a place of worship that was also decorated elaborately? I’d be interested in knowing your experience.

Until then… Happy Guiding
