Last month, I went to the island of Skyros in Greece. Skyros is one of the islands of Sporades in Greece. The reason why I went there is for the very popular tradition that they have there, every March. Our Halloween in Greece is 40 days before Easter and there are many kinds of carnivals throughout Greece and different ways of celebrating. In Skyros, some people get dressed in their local costumes, which represent old shepherds and there are also some girls following them in different costumes, who represent their daughters or wives, because the tradition says that these shepherds were running to save their prey from wolves. These men wear fifty kilos of bells on their waist and have their face covered. They run in the streets of the island, making lots of noise with the bells they are wearing. The reason why they do that is because the tradition says that by doing so, they push away the evil, which in this case is “the wolf”. The women following them, are there to calm them down. I found this tradition very special and that is why I wanted to share it with you. I hope you find it interesting as well!
