Great Reno Balloon Race happens in the month of September. in fact it is scheduled for this weekend (9/6/2019 - 9/8/2019). Generally more than 90 balloons participate in the event. I had the opportunity to visit this event in 2014 & 2015.
It is a three day event. Starts early in the morning, gates to the park, where this event is held, opens at 3.30AM, you have to reserve paid parking ahead of time, or a take cab from down town Reno or walk, since it is just 15-20mins walk.
There is a glow show happens before sunrise around 5AM, with music. It is very interesting to watch. The above/below gif file shows little bit of that. There is a pond in the park, it is a nice place to capture reflection of balloons. It is definitely worth visiting.

@VasT Early morning Glow show is worth visiting this event. as you have correctly mentioned, different shapes and colors of balloons makes the show vvery interesting.
@SilvyC , I was between Darth Vader and Yoda. I would go for the first one, though. A trip on hot air balloon is in my bucket list. I hope soon will make it!
