Photo 1: Roque The Frog and Roque Nublo
One of the most visited natural monuments on the island of Gran Canaria for its beauty is the Roque Nublo, an 80-meter-high monolith that stands on a sloping plain at over 1,800 meters above sea level. It is considered to be one of the largest monoliths in the world and derives from a volcanic eruption. It is thought that following a pyroplastic event in the lower Miocene a mountain 3000 meters high was formed and that with the erosion of water and wind the monolith that we now see emerged. He is not the only one in the area, in fact right next to him there is The Frog and shortly before the Friar that you meet climbing the path. These monoliths were certainly also places of worship for the indigenous Guanches, who performed prayers and sacrifices here. You have to go up a nice path that from the asphalted road leads to Nublo in about a kilometer and a half of nice uphill. Appropriate footwear is required for the ascent, we are on an island with the sea all around but a trekking inside requires adequate mountain equipment and not flip flops. We pass next to the Friar who is above our path, today it will not be our goal and we continue to climb up to a rocky spur which, once again, leads to an inclined plane that culminates with the monoliths of the frog and the Nublo. We only have time to distinguish them, then a thick fog falls on the inclined plane hiding our target. We arrive under the Nublo but with difficulty we see the summit, the fog is intense. We take some photos in the moments that seem most favorable to us but reluctantly we go back without having been able to take the perfect souvenir photo.
In the meantime we are about to go over the rocky downhill spur, the clouds open allowing us to see the top of the Nublo. I don’t think twice, I run up the incline again to the point where I can take a panoramic photo that gives meaning to the day and turns into a beautiful memory. I barely have time to take a picture that the clouds still cover the top. I hope it went well and go back to the spur and finally go down to the valley. When we get to the car, the Roque Nublo is perfectly in the sun with no clouds around. We must be satisfied, it was in all respects an extraordinary encounter with nature.
