I was thinking about how helpful it would be if Google Maps could show which streets are well-lit at night. It turns out, after some research, I found an article indicating that Google is already on it!
The upcoming feature in beta, termed “Lighting”, intends to use yellow lines to mark streets with good lighting.
I’m really curious to see how this evolves. Has anyone else come across this or perhaps even tested it? Wondering about the accuracy and how Google will gather this lighting information (will we be possible to contribute data? :D).
It sounds great to have such a lighting layer. As a source, they can use satellite imagery at night but it needs ultra-high-res photos and lots of processing resources.
But that article is from late 2019. Not sure if this plan continued after that or not because of the pandemic conditions.
While developers of Google Maps have access to Connect like all other Googlers and are known with the Googler badge, it is not common to communicate directly with them.
Instead Google Moderators with their special badge as official ones are here so we can get help from them.
