Google Maps sharing is incredibly frustrating

Does Google plan to ever fix Maps’ massively broken sharing functionality? For years, my wife and I want the very simple function of jointly-maintaining maps of interesting places that we can use on our phones and our computers. We’ve spent hours, and the result is always frustration. The best we’ve found is that one of us can see the other’s points on a map, but can never edit or add their own locations. Plus entire maps routinely disappear from the Saved list or mysteriously forget all sharing permissions, so we have to re-share them all the time.

It’s been like this for years. Every time we go on a trip, we check to see if Google has tried to fix it, and spend another hour getting frustrated at Google. Tantalizing features like “editor privileges” have been been broken for years. Even when we’re sitting next to each other and I click on the “See list on Google Maps” email invitation in Gmail for an invitation sent moments before, the result is

After trying over and over, we usually get read-only “sharing” to work, but never the mythical “editor” sharing Google promises.

How has this been so bad for so long? Are Googlers are so misanthropic they simply can’t imagine people would want to edit a shared list? Does anyone know an app that actually enables people to jointly edit a map on our phones and computers?

If your issues are related to lists on Google Maps, then please try My Maps as suggested by @gmapas above.

Best of luck

Hallo @MarylandTom , welcome to Connect.

Unfortunately not too many people uses Shared lists, but I personally find them very useful

I have tried to replicate your issue but I can’t. Some of the shared lists I’m using is five years old. I still have edit capability, even if the list has not been created by me.

Only the owner of the list can change the editing permissions and the sharing permissions. Are all the lists shared created by you, or the same happens with lists shared with you?

Can you provide some more details about the app version, and the device you are using?

Checking the list of editors, can you see more editors, other than you and your wife?

Have you changed some other privacy settings in your profile in Google Maps or in other Google services?

Hopefully your feedback will help to trouble the issue

Thanks @gmapas and @MortenCopenhagen , but according to https://support.google.com/mymaps/answer/3024925?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&oco=1 My Maps doesn’t work on Android.

Our main purpose is to identify places we want to visit before and during a trip, so it’s easy to use on our phones as we navigate locally. (As I mentioned, we want these places visible on both our computer and phones, which seems like a really basic requirement.)

ErmesT, thanks! I’ll gladly answer what I can to see if there’s any way to get this basic use case to work.

On Android I have Google Maps 11.69.0401 (the current version, updated 3 days ago) on a Google Pixel 7 phone running Android 13 (with the current February 5 security update).

On Windows, I’m running Google Maps in Chrome 111.0.5563.64 (also current).

For instance, when she shares a list with my gmail account, this setting is enabled:

and I receive the email, at the Gmail account in which I’m logged into Google Maps on Android. But that email already seems to back-pedal that the “edit” function may not work, as it says “View on Google Maps” which implies read-only:

In my Google Maps Android (logged in with the same gmail account to which she sent the link with “edit” permission),

when I go to “Saved” in the center bottom, these lists shared with “edit” permission show up under “Lists you saved” which also implies I can’t edit them. When I view the list, there are no edit options on the list, and no options to add a place.

Also in Google Maps Android, when I go to any random place, and click Save:

then I see all of the lists that I’ve created, but none of my wife’s lists including these shared lists.

We don’t know of any other privacy settings; the description “let others edit this list” setting seems extremely clear, although completely broken.

To summarize, I’m all-in on Google: current Google Maps running on current Google Chrome and current Google Android on a Pixel current Google flagship phone, using Gmail accounts. My wife has the same setup, but on a Pixel 6a.

Thanks! For a decade it’s felt like we’re either 1) we’re missing something that should be incredibly obvious, or 2) Google just hasn’t bothered to finish Maps past a beta release, even 18 years after launch in 2005.

@ErmesT Thanks! I’ll try to answer all your questions and hope there’s something we’re missing.

The lists my wife shares with me have this setting:

and when she selects my Gmail account, I receive an email that seems to back-pedal somewhat from this read-write “edit” mode:

In Gmail I click to add the map. Then, in Android Google Maps when I go to the “Saved” item at the bottom of the main screen

the lists she’s shared appear under “Lists you saved”. But there’s no way to edit those lists — no way to add items, remove items, add notes, or rename the list. In Maps, I’m logged in with the same Gmail user the whole time, the same user she invited to edit the maps. Even though in her Maps it still says “Let others edit this list”, for me it’s read-only.

Also in Android Google Maps, when I go to any random point of interest and click the “Save” button:

I see all the lists that I’ve created, but none of these shared lists she created. The same thing happens when I create a list and share it with her; she can’t edit them.

I don’t know of any other privacy settings that would impact these permissions, and “Let others edit this list / Anyone with the link can change and share this list” seems pretty definitive. We don’t see any other editors, and we’re not particularly interested in enabling anybody else to edit our lists.

On Android, I’m running

  • Current Google Maps 11.69.0401 updated 3 days ago
  • Current Android version 13 with current February 5, 2023 security update
  • on a Pixel 7 phone
  • and my wife is the same, except on a Pixel 6a.

On Windows, I’m running

  • Chrome current version 111.0.5563.65 (Official Build) (64-bit) updated today
  • on current Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on a fairly high-powered machine

In short, we’re all-in on the Google ecosystem, running the latest versions of Google tools on Google phones and in Google’s browser. And for a decade every time we plan a vacation, we again try Google’s sharing function, hoping they’ve fixed this incomplete or buggy implementation.

Even 18 years after Google introduced Maps in 2005, it feels like a frustrating half-finished Beta release. Or are we missing something?

Any tips to get shared lists to work as promised?

Thanks!

Oi, @MarylandTom

Atualmente My Maps.

:point_right: Vamos a má notícia:

1

2

3

4

E apenas no modo visualizar.

:mailbox_with_mail: COMPARTILHAR

That’s weird, @MarylandTom

As I said already, I can’t replicate the issue.

I mean, I can see, edit and add places in a list shared with me with editing permissions without any issues, and when I click on “save” the shared lists is available for me to add a place in there.

Maybe I am missing something, so let me tag a Google Moderator, @DeniGu , to escalate your issue with the team.

I love Google My Maps, @gmapas , and My Maps is the core of my Accessibility Life project.

However, the integration in Google Maps App is not perfect (you may have issues with the Side menu) so normally I prefer to use it on desktop or on a web browsers

You are correct. Google dropped the dedicated mobile apps to edit My Maps relatively resently. I forgot. That is also the reason why I now always edit My Maps on my desktop. Works much better than lists for me.

Best of luck

Morten

PS The Google Maps Engine Lite mentioned by @gmapas is not available in my area.

Oi, @ErmesT

  • O Google My Maps desde que foi lançado em 2013 é a única ferramenta do Google que conheço que a interface não mudou nada;

  • Ao contrário de outras ferramentas, o Google My Maps não ganhou funcionalidades, ao contrário, recebeu vários downgrades; (número de camadas reduzido, fim da possibilidade de importar outros tipos de arquivos…);

  • O aplicativo móvel ficou dois anos sem receber uma única atualização na loja do Google até ser extinto;

  • A integração com o Google Mapas foi reduzida drasticamente, hoje sendo praticamente apenas uma “camada” de leitura;

  • Google Maps Engine Lite

Versão com recursos limitados e gratuitos.

Google Maps Engine Pro

:grimacing:

Me perdoe!

Desculpe!

Of course I can, @gmapas , I just need to pick one from Accessible Life: Orto Botanico di Padova - Accessibility Map

In Google Maps App the integration is minimal, and the links on the Maps legend are not working. It works much better if you open it on a web browser. even on mobile.

To make it easier to see the difference I’ve also embedded the Map here.

Times ago I wanted to compare different ways to share places. To do this I made a list, a My Maps and a Story in Google Earth.

I love all the three methods, but of course the choice of using one of them depends of the reason why you use it.

Achei bonito!

Obrigado

Oh noo, @gmapas , the icons are part of the standard set

If you want to see something really “custom” check this link (and this post) on desktop

MyMaps works everywere @MarylandTom it is a website. What they mean in that article is there is no Android App.

Go to https://mymaps.google.com in your favourite android browser.

Hi @MarylandTom ,

Thank you for sharing these details!

Just to double check, when you or your wife share lists with each other via “Let others edit this list” → “Invite editors” → Type email, do you then open the email this triggers on your mobile phone or on your computer? If you open the email on your phone and click on the “View on Google Maps” button, do you still see the error message “Can’t find list”?

Thank you for the tag, @ErmesT .
