Connect Live 2020 - Post prompt 2 - What does the Local Guides program mean to you?
From the very first moment the concept of Local Guides being a program to help people really intrigued me. Currently, me being a student, I don’t have a lot of time on my hand to help people directly, but that I can somehow help some indirectly is something that I like because you can always help in any number of ways. This program has given me the opportunity to not only share my photos and give my point of view on places in Ulaanbaatar, it has created an opportunity to help others make decisions quicker and with some local support. Using the photo of my surroundings and in general of the world i know I live in, not with my selfies and subjected photos, since we have already Instagram for that. At the same time, whilst travelling I can see and try to understand the point of view of different people, and what the most locally enjoy. When I was in Malaysia, with help of Google Maps and Local Guides I was able to traverse comfortably and orientate myself within the cities without knowing the local language. Because you can almost always find a review in your own language or a language that you understand, if not there is always Google Translate to come save the day. So what I am trying to point out is that I feel that our world in any part of it, can feel very welcome and homey, without feeling lost and insecure as you would’ve felt before the days of Local Guides and Google Maps combined. All in all, I feel like there is mutual feeling of starting to understand one another more deeply and empathetic towards all with the help of all Google services. For the people behind all of these different kinds of services, I sincerely thank you and you guys are the ones that help us the people to connect better.
P.S. The walking distance and time approximations are the best because it’s the feature that me and my mom enjoy the most.
Hope all of you out there are keeping healthy, safe, quarantining yourself away from public spaces. Take care!
Life is starting to get exponentially busier here.
