GOOGLE MAP VIDEO

Hi Smart people .

I still remember that the video period we can upload to Google’s map is ( 30 seconds ) . If it’s more than 30 , it’s automatically trimmed to be uploaded. This what I am doing from the time I started as a LG. Now I tried to upload a 27 seconds video length several time , it’s not shown up in the map !!! .

Does Google change the policy of uploading videos ?

Thank you

PS. first try was 4 days ago which mean it should be there in the maps, but it’s not there

Something might be changing, @OSAMA_1

Last week I noticed videos more than 4 minutes long.

I have not seen any delays in publishing flat videos. So I think your videos got caught in the spam filter.

@MortenCopenhagen it is a flat normal video and inst violated any.

do you mean we can upload a 4 minutes video length ? :kissing_smiling_eyes:

didn’t know this ever before .

thank you

@MortenCopenhagen can I know please what kind of Videos that the filter might catch them ?

@OSAMA_1

Here the Guidelines from Google my Business for Videos:

Make sure your videos meet the following requirements:

  • Duration: Up to 30 seconds long
File size: Up to 75 MB
    Resolution: 720p or higher

I agree with @MortenCopenhagen that there are some longer videos in Maps, probably due to some glitch, but we should refer to the Guidelines to prevent the video from being removed in the future.

Can you please give some more details about the video you are trying to upload, and the device used?

Ok @ErmesT I got it . As shown In the screenshot, it is higher than 75 MB .

But it’s not understandable that how can a video higher than 720p and won’t exceed 75 MB !!! .

If we record a FHD 1018 , 2K , 4K or 8K Video, it will absolutely exceed the requirements of Google ( 75 MB ) as you already mentioned .

The screenshot shows a ( 361 MB and 8K quality ) which is higher than 720p !!.

Thank you

Hi @OSAMA_1

The video quality is reduced dramatically after upload to Google Maps. So much so that 4K and even 720 is really overkill. One tip: it seems that portrait format works better than landscape with respect to video quality.

The longer videos are not allowed, I just mentioned I have seen longer ones.

The guidelines for stills also aopply to videos: no watermark, no selfies, no recognizable faces, no copyright issues etc.

If it’s as you said ( dramatically can be downsized ) when it’s being uploaded, then my video I tried to upload several times, should be dramatically reduced , even it’s with high quality details as shown in my screenshot.

As you are trying to upload a video which is 361 MB when the limit is 75 MB. Hence your upload is doomed to fail.

You need to reduce the file size to <75 MB just to upload it.

I am thinking of what Google said as shown in this screenshot

If we record a higher V quality than a 720p for a 30 seconds length, like a 4K , what will you think that the size of the V will be ??

Recording a 30 seconds video length with 4K quality will exceed the 75 MB as Google guidelines shown in the screenshot !!!.

It’s not clear enough .

I have been vondering about this my self also, @OSAMA_1 .

It is not super logical. But here is an example to learn from.

Earlier today I uploaded this video:

As you can see:

Length is 14 sec (<30 sec)

1080 p is >720 p

The file size is 24.8 MB (<75 MB)

The file uploaded with no problems.

And for your information I also downloaded the compressed video to check the size. It is only 360K.

Here is the link to the compressed video:

https://goo.gl/maps/DDuF733mPYMk491n7

The quality is very bad in my opinion. So uploading High quality videos to Google Maps is not worth it.

Cheers

The size of a video depends of four elements, @OSAMA_1

  • Length
  • Resolution
  • Frame rate
  • Encoding

Considering as a constant the last two parameters, you can play on the first two (length and resolution) according to the next table, but of course a compression can be a solution to reduce the size by keeping a decent quality

Quality Vs Size

Size and Quality of a video are two different thing, and not necessarily a 4K video means a better quality, especially if you are not watching it in a 4K screen. Keep in mind that most of the computer screens are Full HD (1920*1080) and the resolution of a mobile phone is normally even lower, so more than 3/4 of the pixel will not be correctly elaborated. Why to upload a video in 4K, if you cannot see it in 4K? While you can zoom in a photo, to appreciate the resolution, you cannot do the same with a video, so it is just a waste of data.

@ErmesT @MortenCopenhagen would you think there will be a difference between uploading videos from Android and iOS? I never had any luck with iOS but no problem using Android before. In the future I have to pay attention to Google guidelines requirements very closely, it may be the reason with problem I have using iOS, video is too big

Hi @Erna_LaBeau

Earlier (and maybe still) the problem for IOS users was that selecting videos was somehow not possible. If that was the case for you, I doubt the guidelines requirements were involved.

@Erna_LaBeau see the screenshot I’ve included in my comments to know the video specifications and the details, so you can record your V as shown in the Shot.

One more, I noticed before that some Iphone users complain from the same you are complaining !

I am an Android user only have no issues, but this time it seems because I’ve recorded a big file size V

Ok @ErmesT that table for sure is right , but I usually record my Vid with a 4K , 8K quality to different sites. This time I think it was a mistake from me I didn’t set my camera Vid quality for Google maps. Additionally, I knew before that there is Automatically trimmed Vid while uploading to Google maps if it is exceeds the 30 seconds. About the resolution ( Quality ) reduction, it depends also in what your selection is there in Google App Photos. If you have chosen the ( High Quality ) then your upload to Google maps will be downsized . If you have chosen the Original Quality then it’s the same to upload to Google maps. But the Vid will also reduced it’s quality even if you have chosen the ( Original Quality ) as the table shown you have in included. There are different reasons that can downsize the Vid while uploading to Google maps.

Thanks for asking @Erna_LaBeau

Can you please check if this apply for you? Set photo permissions on your iPhone or iPad

Thanks @OSAMA_1

I didn’t wanted to mention the part related to Google Photos, because in that case the reason of the downsize is the way the video is stored in Photos, and not Google Maps, and I am quite sure you already searched Maps forum, and read the reply by @ShafiulB exactly about that specific question.

But of course, if you upload the video in Photos first, and then you share it in Maps (and your setting in Photos is High Quality) the quality of the video uploaded in maps is reduced

Hi @Erna_LaBeau !

Apart from checking permissions as per @ErmesT post, the most important thing to check is if the photo and video recording format is not set to the iOS default format which is called HEIF / HEVC :

"Though capturing in HEIF and HEVC format is recommended, you can set these devices to capture media using the older formats, which are more broadly compatible with other devices and operating systems:

  1. Go to Settings > Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Tap Most Compatible. This setting is available only on devices that can capture media in HEIF or HEVC format, and only when using iOS 11 or later.
  4. All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format. "

By doing so you will have full compatibility of the videos uploaded to Maps

If you want to keep the proprietary HEVC format, then I suggest you bring the video format to “4K - 24 fps” always in the “Video Recorder” section.

Personally, I reduced the video recording format to these settings (keeping the iOS HEVC format) and I didn’t encounter any problems on Maps.

Bye,

David

But also Google Maps will Automatically downsize the Vid according to the screenshot I’ve attached , even if the Vid with Original Quality in Google Photo App @ErmesT

Different factors play a role in that
