Google Developer Group (GDG) Cloud Calgary held an event on August 15th to explore the essence of Google Maps, and the Local Guide Community.
It was a great event hosted by @opeyemisnr who is actively reaching out to Calgarians to show them what being a Local Guide is all about.
In the interactive event, we discussed the background of Map Maker and how it transitioned to Google Maps, as well as an introduction on how to get started as a Local Guide. Many people at the event hadn’t heard of the Local Guides program so it felt good being able to describe some of my experiences to them.
Many attendees were shocked to find out that Local Guides do their contributions because of a passion for helping people and not for any monetary gain. I left the event with a renewed purpose to help introduce the Local Guides program to more people and grow the scene in Calgary.
GDG also did a prize draw at the end of the event and I won a Google Home Mini!
