Google, don't go there...

So Google invites me to apply for a meeting in the Bay area, flying me in from Europe (and 199 others from their home locations), just because on and off I post reviews on Google Maps. What kind of thinking is behind that scheme? How do you expect me to rate that plan? Have your read the news lately? Is my contribution to the global footprint by consuming Google Datacenters’ energy not enough?

Hi @reekum you’re correct that air travel is one of the biggest contributors to global warming but our impacts on environment need to be weighed up against our global lives. Sometimes there is value in flying and the ability to build community and life long friends is in my opinion one of those times. Your thoughts may of course be different and you’re absolutely welcome to express them.

Personally I try to offset my plane travel through tree planting, solar energy powering my home and commuting on an electric bike but I do recognise that each of us is different.

ps. I’ve merged your duplicate posts to minimise photon loss in the universe.

Rejecting the invitation will only increase the chances for another applicant, I suppose. So perhaps the best strategy could be completing the application, hoping to become selected, and then deciding to stay home (although reserved seats on airplanes don’t emit less greenhouse gases when they’re vacant… hmm).

Namaste, PaulPavlinovich.

If that’s the case then your saying that we should not meet new people and should not share new ideas to make our lives easier. Global warming is a real thing we all know that and to improve the condition we all have to come together and share our ideal to prevent it and that is only possible when we’ll all come together. If something is creating a problem then the wiser move is not to kill it, instead to cure it. Here Google is providing us with a great opportunity to come together at a place to share new thoughts and we should appreciate it.

Easy now ankitjangid. All I do is rate a restaurant or a museum or a shop whenever I like it, or occasionally recommend people to avoid the place. That’s it. On and off. I can meet people like myself where I am, and very strange ones too. I don’t need to fly around the globe to feel good. I don’t need a level either. I just rate a few stars here and there, calm down.
