A trip to Vienna with Collegium - 7th December 2019
CITY CENTER
The bus drops us off in the Karlsplatz and the guide shows us the way to the Austrian national library. From there he offers a tour of the city or gives us permission to roam free. We opt for the second as we haven’t eaten much up to that point, saving ourselves for the big thing. We have some recommendations of places where to get the original Wiener schnitzel. The first place we go to is full and has reservations scheduled up til 10 pm. To get to the second place we have to walk past the famous Sacher Hotel and see that there is a line formed all until the end of the building and around the corner. Our souls are old and we are senior citizens by heart, but we decide right on the spot we do not have time to wait in that line.
We find a place named Stadboden (https://www.stadtboden.at) and we get lucky enough to immediately score a table. The waiters all seem nice and speak English. I open the menu and get a mini heart attack. For someone coming from Slovenia, where standards are much lower, seeing the price 21€ per a schnitzel shocks me to say the least, but since this trip was a birthday gift I chose to ignore it. We decide to get one original Wiener schnitzel (veal) and one non-original (pork). We both get an extra side dish with it so we chose one french fires and one onion rings.
Surprisingly the food comes incredibly fast, and by that I mean actually incredibly fast. Pretty sure not even 5 minutes pass before we get it. But here comes the most important part, the taste.
The breadcrumbs are crunchy, the meat soft and tender. This schnitzel is realistically the best Wiener schnitzel I’ve ever had. To be fair it is also the first one I’ve had in my life that meets the standards - being veal meat and actually made in Vienna. It is good, amazing even, but overall I do not think paying 21€ for a Wiener schnitzel is at all a good price regardless of how good it is. For that price you get an outstanding T-bone steak that melts in your mouth, and I would take that over the Wiener schnitzel any time.
