Goaldi Mosque

Though I am a regular reader of the #monthlytopic by @HiroyukiTakisawa and others, it is my first post on this topic as I could not manage content earlier to write. Anyway, today I am going to write on a historical mosque in Bangladesh. The name of it is Goaldi Mosque which you can see on the Google Map here. It is situated at Sonargaon in Narayanganj District.

During the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hossain Shah, this nice mosque was built by Mullah Hizabar Akbar Khan in 1519 which means 500 years ago from now. The name of the mosque has come from the name of the place: Goaldi. This is a very beautiful symbol of our ancient architecture. This mosque is no more used to say prayer rather it has been turned into a tourist spot. A new and beautiful mosque has been built several meters away from this mosque.

I visited this mosque at the end of January 2020. It has 3 nice arched doors to enter. You need to put off your shoes before you enter. It has only one dome and 4 corner towers. Round shaped corner towers also look beautiful. The ceiling of the mosque was nicely decorated with designs that will give you an idea about the creativity of the designers of that time. The Imam’s chamber was also nicely designed. The surrounding village are is also very beautiful and green which will give mental peace. If you are lucky you may eat fresh fruits while hearing the bird’s song from the nearby trees!

How to go:

You can go there by bus, car or bike. Wherever you come from, you need to come to Mograpara bus stand . Though if you want to visit this mosque along with other places of Sonagaon then you should enter through the Chaity Composite bus stand to visit this mosque and then the other places. By bus, it will take 40 taka ($ 1 = 84 taka) from Dhaka Gulistan Bus Stop during normal time. Due to pandemic, tourist spots are still closed in Bangladesh, if you go there you can see it from outside only.

I took a short video of the inside of the Goaldi Mosque which you can see below.

Hey @MukulR

Detailed post and video added. That’s a good job. Originality and information are good qualities to put into a post on connect. Kudos :+1:t4:

500 years is a long time really. Do they do some renovations on it from time to time or has just remained like this because it’s a strong building.

What religious history or memorial has this mosque for Islam? Just been curious really and picking interest in your post. Thanks

Cheers

The video was not that big and not good quality @SholaIB . But as I had it so I added that one to this post as relevant data. Some renovation may have been made but I am not sure of that. This mosque is no more used for a religious purpose. This is now under the archaeological and tourism departments. Thanks for your nice comments and interest about this mosque.
