Hey local guides, we just published our 5th episode of the Go Loco podcast! Yay! I am really excited about this one for many reasons:
I got to interview two women local guides and share their the amazing stories. @AIMAN_SAEED from Pakistan and @PriyankaU from India!
The podcast is related to international women’s day.
We got a Googler participating (stay tuned for Part 2)! Yippee!
We have got some amazing feature requests and I hope the Google Maps team will find it useful!
And lastly, its my first episode hosting!
In an attempt to make the podcast more accessible we have broken down the episode into two parts - 1 and 2. We had numerous feedback that it was difficult for listeners to dedicate time to listen to a full episode that is an hour long! So with the smaller sizes, they should be more manageable and you can fit them into your active lifestyles! At the same time, we are releasing both the parts together just in case you want continuity.
So give the first part a listen, and we really hope you like this episode. If you have some thoughts and suggestions on how we can improve the show, please let us know in the comments.
Thank you all for being a part of it! A million thanks to @AdrianLunsong for the edits.
Thanks @vvbellur !! Part 2 will be released by the end of today (7th March). Just wanted to give Part 1 a bit of breathing space and garner its own listening counts!
I would have to say that this #IWD2019 episode has been very interesting. I definitely hold my hand up and admit that there are a lot of issues that I’m not aware of and many things in life that I take for granted. Part of me still wants to cling to the ignorance/innocence of not knowing maybe partly due to the laziness of “hey, it’s not in my backyard so why should I make a fuss” mentality and partly because I hate becoming that cynical person that looks at everything with a weary eye. But thanks to this episode, I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube videos on women rights and empowering women and they have certainly been eye openers! I certainly invite others to do the same! There are many videos out there and rather than link to any specific ones, I would recommend searching “women rights” together with any of the following:
Malala Yousafzai
Michelle Obama
Oprah Winfrey
Emma Watson
And maybe @Linnea can recommend more! And for a more light hearted take on life, search for Ellen DeGeneres too! She’s awesome!
I am certainly very glad for this community that constantly challenges me to better myself by becoming more aware of the plight and challenges of others less fortunate than myself. Let’s keep engaging with each other and continue to talk about issues and finding ways to help out in however way we can!
Oh, as a side note, we decided to include interlude clips in between the interview questions but rather than music segments as we’ve done before, we felt it would be interesting to play back quotes (hence, the many hours of watching YouTube videos). The clips I included were from Michelle Obama (on empowerment), Meghan Markle (on women’s potential), Ellen Pompeo (on equal pay), and Ellen DeGeneres (on the #MeToo movement).
Thanks for sharing your thoughts @AdrianLunsong . We need men to be a part of the discussion.
Many would ask, “Why do we need men to be advocates for diversity?” The reality is that men are still a majority when it comes to leadership positions in an organization, media, politics, and so on. In any society, change is easier to happen when it is led by a dominant group (which in this case are men) and so it’s necessary for them to be involved in the discussion about creating an inclusive environment or to impact change.
For all you men out there, please check out - MARC - Men Advocating Real Change. And here are a few resources too.
I am so glad as Local Guides we are talking about topics and raising awareness and hopefully making some form of an impact. Very proud to be a part of this community!
Excellent cause, excellent job Team Go LoCo, as always.
Can’t wait to hear the next part.
btw, @vvbellur@Linnea you girls sound awesome and I think you must stay as permanent hosts
@AIMAN_SAEED@PriyankaU very happy to hear about your achievements, cause you care for, involvement in the #LocalGuides program and the future directions.
Thanks @OmerAli , honestly speaking I would not have done this if it wasn’t for Vandana. She is such a sweetheart, she really worked so hard and made sure the recording were great. And also the whole Go Loco team, I feel super honored to contribute to this particular episode
Thanks a bunch, Go Loco team for having me on this super special episode @vvbellur@Linnea@AdrianLunsong you guys are the REAL CHAMPS!
A couple of years back, when I first became a local guide, I had no idea that I will be connected to such an awesome bunch of people. It is an honour to be a part of this special episode.
Loved the episode, @vvbellur@AIMAN_SAEED@PriyankaU ! Both parts, but especially episode two and hearing from others like @TraciC on what International Women’s Day means to them. Very powerful episode with great themes and messages that we all should live out. I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for the women in my life, and I was so happy to hear the ideas relating to how Google Maps could help women, especially solo travelers.
