Giving Negative Reviews?

I know it might sound weird, but I have only given one negative food review online in my life…

Don’t get me wrong, I have had plenty of bad food experiences, but I don’t like to share the negativity online. I have just decided to only give positive reviews. I think my system works. I started wondering if people only gave positive reviews, what would happen? I wanted to know your thoughts on this…

Is it better to say nothing at all or something to improve the quality of food or service?

Is it just hurtful to be nitpicky with an establishment that is working so hard to get it right?

Do people really benefit from negative reviews?

I actually started reviewing because of an experience at a local Japanese restaurant. Two years before my review, the owner died and his son took over. He had an incredibly rocky start (he couldn’t slice sushi while taking over the sushi chief position for his family’s restaurant). I remember how hard he tried each day, the guidance he took from customers, and the pride his mother had in his growth. After two years, I heard a man complain about his roll not coming fast enough and miss a carrot, then he started berating the widow about the service. He screamed that he would leave a bad Yelp review if it was not exchanged for free!

I was incensed! First, tradition orange pickled vegetable in Japanese sushi is gobo NOT carrot…

Second, get off your high horse especially if you are so ignorant!

Third, screaming in restaurants to get free food is amoral!

So, it has been my goal to make sure that does not happen for other restaurants!

I would love your questions and constructive feedback

@SeeFoodEatFood Nice :+1:t4: post. Negative reviews are very very useful and I think it’s could you leave one when the need arises.

I think when u leave a negative review and it triggers business owners to improve their services to an appreciable level, kindly update your review once again.

If it doesn’t trigger the business owners to improve of service delivery please don’t remove your negative review; it safeguards others from patronizing it. Thanks

I was just thinking about this and might have to write a post in response. My quick take is that negative reviews are as important as the positive ones, but there are a few things you have to do to do them right. More to come!
