This one is a Hindu Temple with the world’s second tallest idol of lord Shiva placed on the coast of Arabian Sea.
The temple named as Murudeshwar Temple is located on the Kanduka Hill surrounded by the Arabian sea on the 3 sides, forming a peninsula and providing beautiful views of the sea.
The formation of this temple is related to the Epic story Ramayan. It is said that Ravana had acquired the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva to gain immortality and becoming most powerful on condition of not putting the Linga on the ground till he reaches Lanka.
To avoid Ravana gaining immortality and power, Lord Ganesha tricked him and placed the Linga on the ground at Gokarna. Furious Ravana, tries to pull it out of the ground and breaks it into several pieces. The cloth covering the Linga falls here at Murudeshwar and the other scattered pieces of Linga fall in and around Gokarna.
The huge 18 floor Raja Gopura is accessible through a lift inside the temple which leads to the top most floor, offering a WONDERFUL VIEW of Lord Shiva and the beautiful Arabian Sea behind.
One will definitely love this place. The positive vibes here provides inner peace. The Pigeon island (Nethrani Island) near Murudeshwar is an emerging and one of the best destination for scuba diving in India.
