Giardino Botanico Alpino - A Botanical Garden in the Alps

As you may already know, everything related to Nature and Environment is my passion, and I am always searching for places where we can meet nature.

The Giardino Botanico Alpino Giangio Lorenzoni is indeed one of these places.

The Garden is located in the middle of the Cansiglio National Forest, a plateau at the base of the Venetian Alps.

The plateau only has a height of 1000 meters above sea level but, due to the morphological characteristics of the area, the temperature in winter can easily drop to -25 / -30 ° C.

In fact, the plateau looks like a basin, where the cold air that descends from the Dolomites in winter stagnates. This makes the place very special, as you can find plants that normally only meet at higher heights.

This particular microclimate makes the Cansiglio the ideal place for an Alpine Botanical Garden, since it is easy to reach and easy to visit.

The path inside the garden is very suitable for children, with thematic paths, dedicated to areas with different characteristics.

  • Alpine meadows
  • The humid environments of mid-mountain
  • The karst sinkholes
  • Alpine flowers
  • The officinal garden

The guided tour lasts about an hour, highlighting the main aspects of the Garden. We found the visit extremely enjoyable, given the guide’s ability to interact with the public, and in particular with children.

Personally I found very interesting the small officinal garden, due to the characteristics, and the beauty, of some of the plants.

In 2017, more than 750 different plant species could be counted in the garden. The prospect is to exceed 1000 species, to get as close as possible to 1500. For more information on the garden you may find the following Guide interesting, published by Veneto Agricoltura (the public agency that deals with Agriculture and the environment in the Veneto Region): GUIDA AL GIARDINO BOTANICO ALPINO “GIANGIO LORENZONI”. The guide is in Italian.

From the guide are all the illustrations and poster that you can find while visiting the garden.

If you like the mid-mountain, and the walks in the woods, the Cansiglio Plateau is a perfect place for a walk, and in summer you will also find a lot of local festivals, mostly oriented on local crafts and food.

A perfect opportunity to enjoy the nature, and to taste the typical flavors of the mid-mountain: meats, cheeses and sweets

The Garden is part of the places mentioned on How many way to contribute? Nature & history - Alps of North East. If you plan to visit my area, bookmark it.

Woohoo, another one great post about magical places you visit, @ErmesT !

I can’t believe I am the first one to comment, this is a rare opportunity on your posts.

Thank you for showing us this beautiful botanical garden which is worth visiting (bookmarking it). I like the fact that the guided tour is oriented towards children as well as this way visiting this place they would learn something new without being forced to do so.

Last year while walking around Lyon we came across a beautiful Botanical Garden which overflows in a Zoo. Both are located in an old park named Parc de la Tête d’Or. There were many plant species in the garden from Bamboo trees to small flowers. Both the garden and the zoo were without entrance fee and I didn’t notice guided tours there. However, this was an amazing around 3 hours walk during which we had the chance to see and learn many.

Unfortunately, I can not upload any photos as all ended up lost from my husband’s phone :(.

The Botanical Garden in Lyon seems to be amazing, @MashaPS , I love the structures of the old greenhouses. I am surprised that the Garden and the Zoo had been founded on 1857 / 1858, as the gate of the Parc de la Tête d’Or remind me of the Gate of Honor in Versailles, built a century before.

Yes, you are the first one (actually the only one) who wanted to take the responsibility to reply on my post. Maybe I am scaring people

I am happy that you wanted to bookmark the place. In my opinion it would be more convenient to book the whole list, to spend a few relaxing days enjoying Nature and Arts in places that are not very known, but extremely beautiful

Hi @ErmesT ,

very beautiful garden, and yes we know very well your passion about nature and environment  . Nice (and interesting) to see the differences in a Alpin Botanical Garden where the environment is different.

Well I just visited the Botanical Garden in Lucca but you already know it  .

Thank @LuigiZ , I know your post. Lucca’s botanical garden is indeed beautiful so close to the city walls.

This one is a different experience, a kind of protected natural environment, where a large variety of plants are growing naturally.

This is the surprising part, because it looks more like a park than a botanical garden

Great post @ErmesT !

Do you know that I was not aware of this garden? In fact I have marked it among my favorites, next time I will bring the family (in the meantime I have already downloaded the Guide in Italian)!

Can you tell me roughly how long a visit to the Garden can last and if all this can be visited freely or only under the supervision of a guide? I ask this because having in companions even small children I would like to know if they will be free to walk around the park or only in limited / reserved areas.

Thanks again Ermes for these wonderful places that you reveal to us from time to time!

Bye,
David

The park can be visited freely, @davidhyno , and all the areas where you cannot go has small fences around, to protect them. You can visit all the park in less than three hours, or in an hour if you walk fast. The guided visit, included on the price of the ticket, is interesting because you have an explanation of the particular aspects of the park, but after that there is a lot of space for walking around. A nice farmhouse, very close to the entrance of the garden, can be an interesting option for lunch (the garden is closed from noon to 1pm), or you can choose to explore some of the near villages

Beautiful place @ErmesT !!

Is this place suitable to spend all day? Can you do a picnic there or is just to visit for short periods of time?

In Argentina, we started an initiative that we call the spanish monthly writting challenge. One of us starts a writting challenge in Connect and whoever want to writte about the topic can join the challenge. This is an initiative we have, to incentivate people to write in Connect and to promote the usage of the spanish here, as there is not a lot of people in South America that speaks english, and sometimes is a bit discouraging for them to see that in Connect almost everything is written in english. This month, the Spring starts at the south of the world, so we started a challenge called #MiRefugioVerde, something like “My own green refuge” in english. Although I know your post was not written for the chalenge, it remembered me that I must write my post about my preferred Green Place! :joy:

I think your suits perfectly with the topic of the challenge of this month,so I am very glad to see that this month we are all aligned with the green parks! :green_heart:

A big hug from Buenos Aires! :hugs:

Thank you @ErmesT for sharing. My daughter would love to visit it. Just discovered that I drove very close to this park while going to Catello Ceconi.
