I don’t normally share too many photos on here, but I thought I would share this one because it’s proving to be one of the most successful photos I’ve ever put on Maps. This is the main courthouse in Volusia County Florida, and the photo was taken shortly after sunrise with a DJI drone 3 months ago. I’m sure we would all love to know what makes a photo successful on maps but this one is the most successful I’ve ever had as it is getting approximately 5000 views per day. I think it’s nice but I’ve taken and published nicer photos that don’t get this kind of attention. Regardless, I thought I would share.
Thank you kindly, dattalma! You are correct because there seems to be no reason why one photo does well and another does not. My step son gave me a drone for Christmas, but I really did not want one. After I flew it the first time I enrolled in a course to get my commercial drone license - LOL! It is a useful and fun tool. Thank you!
@Sophia_Cambodia , these are also kind words and I appreciate them very much. Thank you! This is a very nice town to live in and not too far from the big city.
When Google selects a photo to be the primary photo for a location, or one of the first few a person sees on Google Maps, there is an exponential increase in views. I have no idea how the Google algorithm determines the sequencing and prioritization of photos for a location. I took this photo of a bar in a Mi Cocina restaurant in the Dallas area and posted it 9 months ago. It has averaged 14,000 views a day and currently has 3.9 million views. While not a bad photo, I certainly don’t consider it one of the best photos I’ve uploaded. Mi Cocina - Southlake, TX by Christoppher Garrett
@christophergarrett , I have noticed the popular photos become the primary photos a person sees on maps, and it only makes sense that as a primary photo then the number of views goes up tremendously. Your photo that is receiving 14K+ views a day is outrageous! Thank you for sharing and reinforcing my suspicions on how Google does some things.
Great photo, @Threesixtography - love the vantage point with the DJI. I’ve noticed many shots like yours for places, particularly residential buildings, have risen in prominence and I could see why: bird’s eye view of literally everything immediately and a bit further from the POI. Especially from that particular angle. I really need to dig out mine!
Definitely dig it out, @SP31 ! There is so much to see and photo. Do you also have your part 107? That’s the ticket! If you ever come up to the Orlando area give me a heads up and we’ll fly!
You have me there, @Erna_LaBeau . To my knowledge I have not had one featured yet. Doesn’t matter too much, though. I enjoy the hobby, and the hobby has turned into a second income as a drone pilot and Street View geek:smiling_face: Can’t ask for much more than that - though, I do ask for the winning lottery numbers.
@SP31 , It is affordable. The federal rules on flying drones, though, are pretty clear. If you fly for ANY reason other than recreation then you MUST have your Part 107 certificate. Technically that means you can’t even fly a drone to check the gutters on your home. The license is not difficult to get either. Just some study and a test. It’s more than worth it.
