Gems of The World - Gadisar Lake in Rajasthan

This is in response to the Gems of The World challenge by dear @KashifMisidia .

Earlier this year I visited the Gadisar Lake in Jaisalmer city of Rajasthan. The lake provided water to this desert city until recently when a canal was built all the way from the Himalayan mountains.

The Ghat on the shores of the lake is built entirely in the yellowish-golden stone found exclusively in and around Jaisalmer.

There are several Chhatri canopies on the bank of the lake, some of which are also in the water and can be reached only via a boat or by swimming.

A concrete pathway from the main road is lined by souvenir shops on both sides leading to the entrance of the lake’s Ghat area.

The beautiful entrance of the lake’s Ghat area is also a residential area along with offices.

Built in the attractive Rajasthani style, this place has unusual Gothic arches.

According to the folklore, it was constructed by a prostitute who was challenged by the local noblemen in the King’s court.

Various Rajasthani artists are seen playing musical instruments for the entertainment of the visitors and accept tips in return.

The various Chhatri canopies are also built along the banks of the lake and provide shade and place for people to spend time in leisure watching the ripples on the lake and the boats passing by.

Here’s a closeup look at the Chhatri canopy.

Over the centuries, trees have overgrown the structures and the roots have encroached into the basement.

In the above picture, on the left side is a small square pillar with soldiers carved on them.

These are called as VeerGals and are erected in memory of the youth who went to war and never returned.

Such VeerGal pillars are found in almost every small and big village in India.

At the Gadisar lake, I found that people were at leisure, merry making, listening to music, watching the ripples on the lake’s surface, having a nice time and all was well with the world.

The Ghat area of the Gadisar lake has limited accessibility features being several centuries old.

Where to Stay

I stayed in the Sagar Guest House inside the Jaisalmer Fort.
This place also has a rooftop restaurant with an amazing view of the city, the palace, and the desert.

Other Attractions in Jaisalmer

  1. The Jaisalmer Indian Army Museum and War Memorial

  2. Sam Sand Dunes Near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan

  3. Why is Jaisalmer Called the Golden City of India?

First of all, Thanks of tons @TusharSuradkar Bhai for keep my challenge alive by your Wonderful post and tagging me in it.

About your post, I don’t have enough word to admire your way of describe everything. As you know I’m a big fan of India 's toursit destinations, and your post always makes me crave more and also makes sad at the same time, because I want to visit these all amazing places, but can’t, even I live just few hundred kilometers from these all places

Rajasthan, Gujrat, Dehli, Kerala, and Karnataka (Hyderabad) these are the places where I want to visit InshaAllah one day.

Surrounding of Gadisar Lake remind me my visit of Lahore last year, when I was so impressed by the architecture of the engineers and constructors of that time, and same I’m feeling when I’m reading your post.

Thanks for sharing such a great post

Hi @TusharSuradkar , you describe this place very well and the pictures are also good. Within a few months I’ll visit Ajmer. If possible I’ll try to visit this place.

Welcome to Ajmer @Saiyen

I was there last year and don’t miss the ‘Dhai Din ka Zopda’ which is near the Dargah.

Another tip I would give is to park the vehicle far away from the Dargah street which is narrow and too crowded + the parking rates are exorbitant.

I am in Rajasthan for the last 13 years, and I’m yet to visit Jaisalmer :no_mouth: . A lake that too in the middle of the desert is extremely rare. Bookmarked your post for future reference @TusharSuradkar .
