What happens in Wickenburg stays in Wickenburg…unless a Local Guide decides to write about it on Connect.
Two of my funniest experiences while filming videos for Google Maps happened in Wickenburg, Arizona (about an hour from Phoenix). The headers below are hyperlinked to the video on Google Maps, and the story behind each will hopefully give you a giggle or two.
Video 1: And I Oop at the Station
I had already spent 2 hours exploring the streets of downtown Wickenburg and taking photos. You know the Local Guide dilemma- “just one more place to stop at…just one more photo.”
100 stops later…
Along the way to see the Santa Fe historic train display, there was an actual train station called BNSF Wickenburg depot. I wanted to grab a video of it too (to allow visitors to see what the small station looked like, as there were no existing imagery). I started to record and stare into the camera on screen, and did not watch where I was going. I almost tripped over the curb but caught myself. The video jolted ever so slightly. Since I said “oops my bad, darn it” out loud, I muted the video.
Video 2: Jumpscare at the Museum
I had a funny memory of recording this one at Desert Caballeros Western Museum. I wanted to showcase what each floor’s exhibits looked like and how they flowed together. The most bottom floor had replicas of rooms and life from Western history in the United States. What I didn’t expect while filming was that a hologram of a bartender would jump out from the replica of the bar. You can hear my soft but audible gasp at the start. I got a good laugh out of that jump scare.
How about you Local Guides? What’s the funniest story you’ve had while filming videos for Google Maps?
