Fujian TuLou an hidden treasure of rural China

Hello everyone,

How many times in your life, during a trip far from home, you have felt that you were exploring a totally different time period?

Well, that’s what I felt the first time I saw a tulou, so today, I would like to share with you something about these hidden treasures of rural China.

Located in the region of Fujian the tulou, which in simplified Chineseis written 土楼, (or 土樓 in traditional ), literally: means earthen buildings’, and is based on the literal meaning of the Chinese words tu (土 “earth”) and lou (樓 “building”).

You might have seen this building in some movies or in trailers (like the incoming Disney movie of Mulan)!

The complex I visited, are located a couple of hours form the city of Xiamen. Surrounded by tobacco and tea field the tu lou are accessible only through a gate which restrict and control the entrance of all the tourists, since from 2008 was declared an Unesco World Heritage ( https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1113)

Usually tu lou are mostly circled buildings, and in the middle are located small altars ore wells.

but some were made rectangular

Original this structure where used for defensive purpose, and exhibits its unique characteristic as a model of community housing for equals, since all rooms were built the same size with the same material, exterior decoration or even windows.

Is difficult to establish when they were built, anyway is been though between XIII and XIX century.

If you plan to visit such a wonderful place, don’t forget your camera, the landscape are amazing.

Unfortunately, not all of the tu lou structure are maintained well, with rubble and an heavy manure smell anywhere, let’s remember that these are houses and in some them they still live inside.

I would like to present these hidden treasures to all you, to increase also the international awareness on this amazing gift that history has brought us, and maybe to give you some good ideas for a future trip.

What do you think about it? Ever hear about it?

I the occasion I want to whish all of you a happy Chinese new year!! and remember if you are of the year or the mouse always wear something red with you it will bring you good luck ?

Thank you @nicspelgatti for sharing with us such a beautiful and historic place.

Yes you are right we have come across this kind of buildings only in movies. It is my first time I am seeing this breathtaking view through your eyes.

The first picture is really amazing one. Can you tell me about the weather of this place, the time you took this picture specifically the first one, was it winters season?

Hi @ComradeShah thank for your replay :slightly_smiling_face:

all the picture were taken on the same day with my phone ( which is a normal 200 Euro phone so not big deal, the landscape is so amazing that even without filters appears to be wonderful)

The pictures were taken in October around 15:00 o’clock, the weather in that area is pretty much tropical, very humid and grey sky XD

have you ever been to China?

Great photos and story, @nicspelgatti

I lived in a rural area of central China for a year and a half, but it was more than 25 years ago, so I don’t have digital photos to share. I have a scan of the old barber shop, btw :slightly_smiling_face:

It is amazing to think that at just two hours from one of the biggest industrial city of China there is a so interesting place. I am tagging @TsekoV , as I know he’s interested of history of China. Isn’t it?

Yes @ComradeShah , indeed beautiful memories.

Chine was interesting on 2005-2006, @nicspelgatti . A lot of young, new engineers, were entering in the market, in the factories, in the big farms.

Together with marketing experts. The change in the Chinese industry happened in a few years, with a huge transformation of all the production process.

For me, being an engineer expert in production process, it was a quite exciting challenge.

Ciao @nicspelgatti ,

wow, this post is amazing and yes I really get the feeling of the different time period looking at your beautiful and special photos.

I never saw a tulou but I’ve been in China several times, mostly big cities and the one which gave me a bit that feeling was Beijing, especially the suburbs. I’m a lover of discovering the local culture so I really enjoy those posts, thank you for sharing.

@ErmesT very nice your photo, although not digital but perfectly in shape with what has been captured, here a bit more modern rubbish collector ?

wow @ErmesT thank’s for sharing your amazing experience!! I really wished to have seen on person that particular time of China. On my experience, I saw that it remains a bit of that China in the small villages, like this small cities market (honestly I ate my best dishes in that market) :yum:

During that time how did you handle with local cuisine?

Thank’s again for sharing!!

Thanks, @RiccyB for your reply!! oh, trust me you are going to love China is very marvellous, plus (since I know you like beers) the beers are soo cheap and good that you want to remain there forever!!!

have you ever heard about the city of Qingdao? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qingdao)

it’s an old German colony, during their stay germans built many beer factories when Maoism took place and the german left the country, they leave behind the factory of beer, so that’s how is born the Chinese beer Qingdao, interesting uh? XD
