Hello everyone in the Connect Community!
I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share a small, heartfelt journey of how I stumbled upon Google Maps and eventually became a passionate Local Guide.
How It All Started (Back in 2015)
Back in 2015, while I was a university student, I was looking for ways to support myself as I didn’t have a formal job at the time. I started doing deliveries for local e-commerce platforms.
Navigating through complex streets and unknown routes was a daily challenge. That’s when Google Maps became my ultimate companion. Whether it was finding a hidden lane or reaching an unfamiliar address, Maps guided me effortlessly every single day.
Contributing Without Knowing What “Local Guides” Was
As I navigated the city daily, I naturally started making edits—correcting mismatched pin locations and adding photos of places I visited to help myself and others remember them better.
At that time, I had zero knowledge about the Local Guides program. I wasn’t doing it for points or badges; I was simply documenting what I saw during my daily routes.
The Turning Point in 2018
It wasn’t until 2018 that I officially discovered the Google Local Guides program! When I logged in and saw that my random edits, photos, and reviews were already helping thousands of people, it was an incredible eye-opener.
From that day on, contributing to Maps stopped being just a habit—it became a sense of responsibility.
Why I Still Contribute Today
Years have passed, life has evolved, but my dedication to Google Maps remains unchanged. Every time I get an email saying “Your photo reached 10,000 views” or when I realize a small edit helped someone avoid getting lost, it brings immense joy to my heart. Knowing that a small effort from my keyboard or phone screen can solve a real-world problem for a stranger is truly priceless.
Thank you to the entire Google Maps team and this wonderful Connect community for keeping us connected.
