The Story of Alcatraz
Way back in 80’s I watched a film called “Escape from Alcatraz”,The main character was my favourite actor, Clint Eastwood.
The Movie was based on a true story.
The Story revolved around the main character trying to escape from the Prison. Escaping is impossible, as the prison is located on an island surrounded with icy water and tall cliffs on sides, and shores miles away.
Yet, many Prisoners try to escape the prison, only to be recaptured, shot down or die due to drowning in the icy water.
It was an action packed movie, which had me at the edge of my seat throughout.
The movie etched a mark on my memory, So much that I had an urge to see the prison.
And then, I got the opportunity to go to San Francisco.
First thing I did was, I held a taxi and went to San Francisco bay, I started walking along the pier, recording a video. While recording I stepped onto the wooden short platformed bridge, that took me towards the sea ,as I got nearer, my Camera suddenly rested on the island and ‘lo and Behold’ There stood the Famous Alcatraz. For a Moment my breath skipped a beat, I stood there spellbound. It felt like watching movie in real life, the structure stood there majestically.
Display of the banner on the sideboard mentioned a cruise around the island, not to forget the souvenir shop selling souvenirs like inmates mugs,Striped prison uniform etc.
So The Site now has been obtained as a heritage structure for Tourists and Travellers.
It’s No more a prison that housed notorious Prisoners at one point of time.
To cherish the Memory, I picked up this Fridge magnet from the souvenirs shop. This FM inherently reminds me of my overwhelming moment at San Francisco.
