If you are in Metro Manila and have very limited time for a tour, visit Fort Santiago in the old, walled city of Intramuros.
Fort Santiago is one of the most important and a must-visit landmark when in Metro Manila in the Philippines.
Fort Santiago offers a window to turn-of-the-20th-century Philippines, particularly during the waning years of the 333-year Spanish occupation, the American Occupation, and the Second World War.
The best way to tour Fort Santiago is via a 2- to 3-hour guided walking tour. For the best guided tour experience, look up “Mabuhay Guides Intramuros” on Google. (Disclaimer: I am neither a Mabuhay Guide nor professionally associated with the Mabuhay Guides. The extent of my association with a Mabuhay Guide is when my family hired one—whom I subsequently befriended—during our own tour of Fort Santiago).
Although the inside of Fort Santiago should be quite safe, especially with a Guide, visitors are advised to be wary of pickpockets, snatchers, and vendors/hawkers on the way to and near the entrance of Fort Santiago. Should you wish to buy souvenirs, always seek the help and advice of your local Guide.
