Hey guys,
I’d love to share my (food) trip story with you on here! Recently I visited (my favourite city) Antwerp, Belgium and because I just love to travel & experience new things I decided to make this trip all about trying the food specialties that this city has to offer. I’ve been in the city for five days and can say that I’ve tried very unique and yummy foods!
Breakfast & Lunches
In a city where people love breakfast and lunch, brunch is a well-known word. I have had some pretty good breakfast and lunches in Antwerp! I have been to Roest which is near the harbour. First of all: it is a pretty cool place to go to! Second: gosh, I love the food. You should really look this place up and at least visit it once when you’re near Antwerp.
Except for brunch I have also had some pretty good lunch. The one that will stay in my mind is the one at The Frites Atelier! This is such a good concept and I am really wishing it to come to Amsterdam! They have the Belgium fries (which are already super popular) topped with all kind of yummy stuff. I took the ones topped with hachee which is a slow-cooked Belgian Beef meal. The fries were freaking delicious!
Dinner
I’ve had dinner on all kind of places. I am really not a person who likes to have the same type food every day of the trip, so I’ve been very critical about where I was going to have dinner. For this reason I chose to have dinner in 4 different type of kitchens.
The first night we decided to take a 20 minutes’ walk through the city centre to have delicious Mexican food at La Taqueria. This Mexican place is a really nice bar & cuisine for students. Prices are affordable and everything has these bright, positive feeling creating, colours! We had the chicken tacos & beef nachos. It was very very yummy!
The second night we prepared to have a classy kind of dinner at a chique Belgium restaurant called El Bife. The owners are Argentinian and all the dishes on the menu have this hint of Latin American food. The restaurant was clean, cosy and the staff was oh so nice. We decided to have the Entrecote & the T-Bone Steak. The meat was perfectly fine and I really cannot remember eating a dish this good ever before. Thinking back of this dish already has me feeling like eating it again. A big recommender to go to guys, really!
The third night we decided to try some typically Belgium food. We went to the harbour of Antwerp where there is this big industry building located. Inside of this building there are different kind of restaurants separated by walls. We decided to have dinner at Balls & Glory, where they have these amazing Burgundian meatballs with mashed potato! The food is served quickly and absolutely delicious!
The last night we decided to have some burgers at a random burger bar near Central Station called Gourmet Burger. This one really is the only one I do not recommend. The burgers aren’t awful, don’t get me wrong, but the staff is really unfriendly and in my opinion the price/quality is not in balance. That was a real bummer.
Snacks
When in Belgium, you tasted… Waffles! And that’s ofcourse what I did. Eventhough I know Belgium waffles, because I’ve visited Antwerp & Brusselss before. I just love to eat waffles, especially when they are still hot!
Another Belgium snack that is pretty awesome, is the Éclaire. This is a light pastry filled with a kind of whipped cream and topped with glace. It tastes amazing. I tried the ones of Chez Claire, because this shop is all about éclaires! They sell them in all kind of colours.
Then there is this other snack you must try if you are a cookie monster: cookiedough! In Antwerp there is this unique shop called The Dough Bar. Over here they sell cookiedough as if it is ice cream. It is such a unique thing, I just had to try it! Unfortunately I can conclude that this snack is not really my thing, but I have never been a cookie monster though.
Beer
Last but not least. Beer. Belgium really is a country that is quite an expert in these special kind of beers. One beer I really love is: Kriek bier, which is a cherry/fruity flavoured beer. I just love it. When we were a little lost in Antwerp we just ended up in a bar called: The Beer Lovers. It was an amazing bar. It is cosy, not too busy and has it own type of fling. Don’t forget to visit it.
Thanks a lot for baring with me this whole story. Sharing it over here makes me feel like I have a community around me who loves to find out more about local places!
Xoxo,
