Food at the Nanay Port, Iquitos

So I was going to take a boat to one of the native communities across the Amazon river when I notice the great variety of “colorful” and “bizarre” dishes. They are all grilled but come on!! I’d have never imagined I could find alligators, snake eggs and the snake itself, turtle and its eggs. So if you are brave enough don’t forget to try these dishes before boarding to the Amazon expeditions. And if you’re not that confident, you can try the less bizarre dishes: paiche", “doncella” and other local river fishes, as well as the famous piranha.

Iquitos is waiting for you!! Enjoy Peru!!!

Hi @ADavilaZ ,

I’m speechless, thanks for sharing!

The grilled aligator head looks very bizarre. Have you tried it? Do they eat the brain also? I’ve tried many weird things, but this shocked me. Is it something traditional there?

By the way, how was your trip to Peru?

ohh

Hehe don’t you wanna try @larbi ??

Hello @Petra_M thank your comments.

Well, I did try the alligator (not the brain but I am sure they can offer you that part of you ask for it) and the snake. They taste very similar to chicken (just grilled with a bit of salt and vegetable oil). I also tried the piranhas and other dishes, they were more delicious, hehe.

Well, if I’d have to be fair and sincere, none of them were bad. I think the problem is our mind which make us think they are bad and maybe awful to try but it is just food, hehe, weird maybe but that’s all. Will I try it again? Of course!! That’s part of the tourism, to visit and eat what people here eats.
Oh by the way, there is other famous dish, the “suri”, it is a worm that likes in some tree’s roots and they are also eaten here as a snack hehe. I attach a picture of that ready to be enjoyed.

About your question that is it traditional food? Maybe in ancient times it would have been a traditional food for certain occasion or festivities but nowadays they are just “normal” food that you have to eat when it is the opportunity, let’s remind that Iquitos is very far from other cities and in addition, it can be reached only by plane or ships so there’s no other way that eating most of the animals that exist here such monkeys, snakes alligators, fishes, birds and the most attractive and “civilized” chicken, pigs and maybe cattle.

Ohh and of course my trip was great!! Please, visit Peru. Peru is really cheap, there are lot of interesting places to visit, lots of dishes to try from the most traditional to the most modern gourmet ones. And of course, you can take advantage on the #LocalGuides hehe who will be happy to help you!! You can count on me! I like helping people!!!

Thanks for the reply @ADavilaZ !

Actually the worm looks better than sounds. I haven’t think about visiting Peru, but now you caught my interest. And I totally agree, that this is a mental thing that we don’t want to eat worn, aligator or snake. They could be very delicious and full of protein.
