Followers going on and off

I’ve been moving back and forth from EU to Bangkok Thailand where I now life and what I noticed was that when I’m in Europe I don’t get any followers and when I’m in Thailand, only the first 3 weeks and then it dies down.

When I first went to Thailand in October, I gained my first new followers ever. Before that I had only one friend and one family member following me. Then it stopped after 3 weeks and since I moved back to the Netherlands in December no new followers joined. Now I’ve been back in Thailand for 3 weeks and it started again. First 3 weeks I gain followers and then it stops.

What’s happening here?

I’m not doing this for the followers but I do feel pride having them and I see many guides around me with thousands and thousands of followers.
I do however feel pride as it makes me happy when I reached 6 million views on my photo’s and reaching another level on for example doing edits or reviews and it gives me the energy to continue for level 9 (I’m halfway past level 8, 31K points) and perhaps even go for the mythical level 10! But if I don’t get followers who check out my input, I’m going to be the only level 10 with just 30 followers… that would be a bit weird right

Your input is checked everyday, @Latte , by the Google Maps users, when they check the photos of the places where you contributed, or read your reviews to choose if visit a place.

You can ask to yourself: why am I following people? Do you find what they upload in maps always helpful?

Google Maps is not designed to be a social media platform and the purpose of Follow people is to give us the possibility to find, in our area of interest, people who are active and who can provide us, through their contributions, information that can be useful for us.

Do you really check what the people that you follow is posting? I personally do, but regarding my followers … Well, a lot of them are just gamer who think that having followers is important. many of them are just spammer.

Don’t worry about followers, they will come when they will find your contributions helpful.

Wow Ernest, there’s a lot of personal opinions in your reply that really don’t have anything to do with my questions but I guess thank you for sharing your opinions?

Recap:

  • why does it stop after 3 weeks
  • why does it only work when residing in Asia and not EU
  • can I do something about it

Hi @Latte

  • why does it stop after 3 weeks

It is probably random.

  • why does it only work when residing in Asia and not EU

Also, probably random.

  • can I do something about it

Not the aspects mentioned in 1 and 2. But you can deny and remove people from following you. If you want more followers you can do two things: Make great contributions and invite people to follow you on social media etc.

Cheers

Hi @Latte

Thanks for asking.

Mine was an analysis about why someone follow others in Maps.

I only see one relation between the place where you are, and the followers. If you normally write reviews in the place where you are, your reviews will be visible in the “for you” tab of Google Maps in the area where you wrote the reviews, and we know that Asian like to follow people more than European.

So the correlation is probably related to “social” attitude, and to the location of your reviews.

As the “for you” tab show only the most recent contributions, when you move back to EU and your reviews in Thailand become old, you don’t get more followers.

As you can read in New year, new features to connect with your community , Google is improving our profiles to give the opportunity to others to follow us because they have a common interest in our contributions, maybe because they are from the same area, or because they have a common interest (e.g. cakes). here below my profile with the “creator topics”

Then there are the gamers. They will follow you (and me) because they just wants to reach a high number of followers. They mostly use the procedure shared by Morten, posting their profile in the Social media, with the indication “follow me”, not caring about contributions, but simply about the number of Follower that they can reach.

On a side note, I would like to ask you to “tag” the person you are responding to by using @ followed by the name of the person you want to mention, as you can see in the screenshot here below. in this way we will be notified. Active members reply to a lot of post, so we can easily miss a reply if we don’t know that it is addressed to us
