I’ve seen this from a lot of gamer friends and people new to my area. Google Maps, but it has a Fog of Ware for places you haven’t visited yet. Would love to have an “explorer” mode on my map for places I haven’t adventured through. Or, something silly/neat like needing to climb a skyscraper to unveil more of the map.

Did you check the Explore tab in your Maps app? It should present places interesting to you based on your location and search history and much more. Maybe what you are suggesting is already in place.
Let me know if this is what you were looking for. If not, please share more examples of what you want.
