Flowers blooming in Tallinn ...in January #arosefortheplanet

Hello dear friends Local Guides,

I would like to share with you, what I noticed.

When I’ve came to Tallinn, Estonia in late December and I was definitely surprised when I saw blooming flowers on a flower bed nearby our house.

Let’s look at my collage: blooming roses, chrysanthemums and even snapdragons (antirrhinum). These photos were taken on 5 January 2020. Such flowers blooming in January is unusual for the Northern latitudes!

Typically, the winter here is cold, windy and with temperature changing from plus to minus.

Indeed, winter comes here in November. Last year I came to Tallinn in November it was already very cold and frosty. Naturally, the weather was still cold on Christmas holidays and later to April.

Tallinn is the capital city of Estonia. Estonia is located in the Northern Europe on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, is washed by the Finland Gulf and the Riga Gulf The climate in Tallinn is moderately cold. The average air temperature during the year is slightly less than 6 degrees Celsius. Usually the weather with a stable average temperature below zero was established in late November – early December. The real winter begin with snowfalls, strong winds, storms on the Finland Gulf.

Therefore, usually it was a challenge for many plants to survive in the winter. People here cover roses and other sensitive to frost plants with spruce branches to avoid over freezing.

I found it unusual, flowers blooming in the winter …in Tallinn. It’s not typical that flowers bloom in the winter here…

What do you think about climate change?

Do you notice something unusual in your area?

Thank you,

Jane

Hey @JaneBurunina ,

Thanks for the great photos. I guess that’s the reason why roses are the favourite flower of so many people around the world. Not only are they beautiful but also resistant to the climate changes. I remember that the roses in my garden were blooming until late November when it got really cold.

Do you have a flower garden where you live?

Hello @JaneBurunina

Thank you very much, I notice with sadness that 1500 km north of my city is much warmer this winter
However, it did not surprise me, in the summer of 2008 I was visiting in Sweden and I had some hot weather, then most of the green grass surface of Sweden dried up
Thank you very much again

Thank you for this post @JaneBurunina

Tallinn is really North, I suppose it should be colder.

I am surprised for the rose in Treviso, but what you are showing me is crazy for me.

I agree, @MoniDi , that there are roses in November, but I never saw a fully blossomed rose in Treviso at the beginning of January, as the temperature is expected to be - 3 to - 5, not + 9. What about Bulgaria?

Hi @To_paul

We started collecting unusual facts from different places. I think, after some time we will get definitive presentation about climate change in the planet scale due to the efforts of Local Guides around the world.

Definitely, @ErmesT your new LGs project aRoseForThePlanet is absolutely important for our future!

Indeed, when I’ve seen flowers blooming in January, I considered it like unusual fact.

And I think, many people think the same way. We don’t think about global issues in our day-to-day life. That’s a reason why we have to collect information and share about climate change to grow awareness about it.

Thank you @JaneBurunina for this post, the roses are so beautiful, too much indeed for January especially when I see the beautiful photo of the pink rose … such a spring feeling rather than mid cold winter.

Hello @JaneBurunina

Local guides are something new, environmental pollution and climate change are older, so hopefully local guides will be able to observe and photographically signal the problem.

Thank you very much

Hi @ErmesT ,

I don’t think I have seen a blooming rose in January, especially now that it’s snowing almost every day. However, I have seen a few snowdrops and they are so fresh. I cannot wait for this bad weather to be over and the flowers in my garden to bloom again.

Hi @JaneBurunina

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful post. I never noticed it before Ermes and yours post, but now I will visit and check that what is situation here. We all should contribute and make efforts and should fight against all type of pollution. Because this is the major reason of globally changing of climate and I believe that this will be dangerous for our next generations.

Shukriya  Zhanna for your wonderful post.

Hi @KashifMisidia

Actually, when I saw flowers blooming in Tallinn in January, I’ve noticed it like just unusual fact.
But I reconceived this fact, when I learn about A Rose for the Planet by Ermes, read his post and looked on this fact from other side.
Our planet is changing and Local Guides started to document this via collecting unusual facts in the nature around us.

Thank you @DavidTito for your kind words!

I would like to ask you, what do you think about creating a new MyMaps, especially for new Local Guides project A Rose For The Planet by Ermes. Probably, if Local Guides will collect many facts, which show climate change in the differenct parts of the world your Map will be very helpful!
