I love this shot I took here at one floating village in Siem Reap, at Kompong Khleang floating village. It was about to rain while I took this photo.
It was when I went field visit to various communities around Siem Reap in 2019 when I just started my job with one organization here.
Kompong Khleang floating community is the best floating village around Tonle Sap, compared to other 5 floating villages but it is about 45km from Siem Reap town.
According to the committee who is member of this floating village community, there are about 1,700 houses on stilts like this. They look like cranes to me - knees are longer than body!
To avoid sinking underwater in rainy season (July-October), they have to build the house so high but they are very strong.
Most residents are fishermen whose livelihood based mainly on fishing in the Tonle Sap (Great Lake)
Few houses decided to become homestay where visitors can spend the night with here, range is from 15-20$/night/person.
All photos were taken by Canon 700D with some color adjustment.
Thanks for inviting me to visit this beautiful place @Sophia_Cambodia You have added so many beautiful photos, any tourist will like them a lot. In Bangladesh, we have size boats and some houses standing on the bamboo pillars. So these photos of this post give me a special Bangladeshi flavor. One day I will visit Cambodia to see the beauty of this nice country. Regards.
@MukulR hi Mukul, thank you very much for the insightful comment about stilt houses.
I am sure it will be eye-catching. There are other types of floating houses seat on the plastic water tanks (no pillars, houses float by the empty tank) in this community too.
@TusharSuradkar interesting! Thank you for the insightful comment.
These houses are strong and built and lived by locals for generations. They are immobile. They have different charms in different seasons. Since climate changes, it does not look as it used to. In dry season, we can ride on the road and in rainy season, all these houses are just maybe 20-30cm above water. If the climate still continues like this, I think they will change soon. They are too tall, I almost don’t dare to climb up on them.
Great photos of this fishing village @Sophia_Cambodia . Why are some houses built on high stump like this? Is it because there is that much flooding during high tide, it just looks a lot?
Thank you so much dear @Sophia_Cambodia for this amazing post about floating houses in your country. Thank you for sharing post about sightseeing in your country, about culture and unusual facts.
I have some experience to visit such houses and stayed there per 3days .,when I lived in Vietnam.
It was unforgettable time. We lived 3 days in Vietnamise family.
@AdamGT thank you Adam. Well, these houses are strong and built and lived by locals for generations. They have different charms in different seasons. I went there in dry season so you can see like this. In dry season, we can ride on the roads around the village but in rainy season, all these houses are just maybe 20-30cm above water. Since many hydro dams builts in Lao, they said Tonle Sap also affected by low water so they did not see big water for 5-6ys now.
@helga19 hey my dear, long time no hear, how are you doing so far?
I’m glad you got a nice experience. These places are so unique and difference. It is worth to try. I just think they need to work on the boat exhaust a bit, not to let it roam so loud. They are fishermen, boats are their core meal but a bit of sounds of the engine sometime can be disturbing, unless you totally understand and okay with that.
@helga19 I’m glad to hear that my dear. Yes, it is festival time and everyone is going back to the village to relax and meet up with family and relatives. I will keep that in mind and sending love from Cambodia
Really i like this post also very much! A culture of a small group of people in Bangladesh also live in the boats with family! Now a days their population becomes smaller to smallest ! But still exists! The small group of thos people we call in bengali “Jajabor” or “যাযাবর জাতি”
Anyway good to read your topic and nice to enjoy your beautiful photos of Floating Houses of Kompong Khleang
@MAHBUB_HYDER hey hey my friend, don’t be sad. You are not forgotten, but making new comment and tag your name is difficult as I don’t remember the exact spelling of your name and it doesn’t come up if I spell incorrectly. Unlike when you comment and I reply, it will come out directly with just typing the start alphabet. Next time, I will tag you in my post
