Flat Stanley - Biodiversity Day 2023 - Share your Biodiversity

Note from Ermes: If you don’t know Flat Stanley, you can find his presentation to the community in this post: Flat Stanley Went to Italy - the prologue

Hello, my name is Stanley, “Flat” Stanley.

I was drawn two months ago in California, then my classmates then put me in an envelope, and I reached Ermes in Italy.

What is biodiversity?

This morning, while Ermes was having breakfast, I heard that last Monday, May 22nd, was International Biodiversity Day, so I asked him: “what is biodiversity?”

“Biodiversity is the variety of all living species on our planet”, Ermes replies.

I’m not sure I understand, so I tell him. “Okay, I’ll show you,” he replies, and I see him pack his backpack.

“Where are we going”, I ask? “Let’s go see the biodiversity”, is his answer. In half an hour we are in the car, and we are traveling towards the mountains. An hour later we arrived. We start walking, and in 20 minutes we are in front of a sign, where it says “path of biodiversity”

Maybe I understood: there are places in the world where there is biodiversity, and Ermes took me to one of these special places. “No”, he says, “biodiversity is everywhere. I brought you here because you can see it very well here. So today let’s go see the flowers”

We start walking, and all around us there are flowers of various colors, but mostly blue and yellow. He asks me to take a good look, and I realize that they are all of different shapes. There are many, in a few meters we see many different flowers.

At that point I understand: “Biodiversity is the variety of all living species on our planet”. If in a few meters we have seen so many, who knows how many more we will see walking more, or exploring other places in the world.

And surely the same will be true for other living species: mammals, birds, fish, insects. Lots of different species. I’m happy, but then another question arises inside me: I really like this biodiversity, but … What is biodiversity for?

What is biodiversity for?

Ermes points a finger and asks me: “What do you see in those two flowers?”.

They look exactly the same to me: “same height, same shape, the plant has the same leaves”, I say. He insists, and asks: “Don’t you see any difference?”. Well, one is white and the other is pink, but what difference does it make?

Then I stop, and I understand: they are of a different color! They are almost the same but not quite the same. I tell Ermes and he replies that yes, now I’m starting to really understand biodiversity: life’s ability to experiment, adapt and learn. This is the secret: experiment, adapt and CHANGE A LITTLE.

The ability to adapt to the environment, to live from the Poles to the Equator, to live in Rainforest and deserts.

The ability to mix genes, to evolve and become stronger.

Biodiversity is the result of evolution. Each species has evolved and changed, and each species helps the others to change. Each species has a purpose and a role.

Right now I understand that my brothers and I, the many Flat Stanley who are exploring the world like me, are also part of biodiversity. They experiment, learn different things, and change.

How do plants exchange experiences

The same thing happens in this Community, where people exchange experiences, learn from others, and change.

“But plants” I ask Ermes, “how do plants exchange experiences? In short, they have roots, they don’t move” .

He smiles, and replies: “the answer is right next to you”

Share your Biodiversity with me

At this point it makes me think that, if in a few hundred meters I have been able to see so much biodiversity, who knows how much more there is in the rest of the world.

Do you want to show it to me?

Ermes told me that one day his friend @KarenVChin took him to visitThe Ruth Bancroft Garden & Nursery, and he promised me that soon he will take me to visit the Giardino Botanico Alpino - A Botanical Garden in the Alps

Where do you want to bring me?

Oh noo, @SanjayBDLG , thank you.

Ermes told me that you are one of the most popular Local Guides of Bangladesh, and I would be happy to know more about biodiversity in your country.

As you read in the post (have you read it?) I never heard about biodiversity before last week, and ermes was so kind to show me everything.

Now I am a biodiversity friend, and I am becoming curious

Changing subject, have you seen any of my brothers around you?

Hello @ErmesT ,

Thanks for bringing this topic up. Flat Stanley is quite inquisitive like us. He posed the apt questions and you explained him in a very informative way.

This gives us also a deep insight.

In our country also, I keep on discovering and visiting such biodiversity places. One of such examples is here in this link, the name of the park itself is biodiversity park. In the morning hours we can very clearly listen to birds chirping like a song. Varieties of flowers are there.

Biodiversity Park in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India

Moreso, India is full of such biodiversity places. I shall be sharing couple of them in a time to come.

Keep building informed community stronger :muscle: together.

@ErmesT I like very much Stanley who is a fantastic teacher. For your kind information, Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose worked in various branches of science. He was a Bengali physicist, botanist, biologist and the first science fiction writer. His research led to the flourishing of the field of botany and the initiation of practical and research science in the Indian subcontinent. He proved to the world that plants also have life.

Reading your article reminded me of his words.

Thank you so much, sir @Kumaarsantosh . Yes, Ermes in good in answering questions in a way that I can understand, because sometimes I found answers around, but all difficult to understand.

He also helped me to find your park, because your link doesn’t work

We found three place, very close one to each other, so Ermes suggested me to ask you to check. He says that the Local guides always check for duplicates, for what he call “Maps Integrity” (this is difficult to me to understand, but I suppose that if the same place is added multiple time it can create some confusion  ). To me the three places seem to be the same one, because the (beautiful) photos in there are almost the same

Are you from India, mr. @Kumaarsantosh ? Do you know that I have two brothers in your country. madam @RosyKohli introduced them to me here  . Maybe you know some more brother of mine

Thank you @ErmesT for your generous response. Quite overwhelming.

I am sorry that the link provided by me was not working and created hassle for Stanley.

I have updated the link now. My apology to Stanley.

Yes with the same name three places exist and all are the same… Many times I had reported to Google but everytime it gets denied. As recent as on May 19, 2023, I had reported twice but result is again the same. You can see the below snapshot.

Yes, I am from India.

No, I did not know about Stanley’s brothers in India.

Thank you @ErmesT for introducing Madam @RosyKohli and Stanley brother Handley and Sister Staley to me.

I may have Stanley cousin Princely around me. Soon I will bring him up here.

JAI HO!!!

Great @Kumaarsantosh

Ermes says hes is already at work on the places.

If you check the three links now you will se some small change already

Thank you so much, @SanjayBDLG for introducing to me Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose (link from Wikipedia).

He’s famous, wow, wow, wow. Did you met him?

Of course plants have life, Sanja. I am made of paper, and the paper is made with wood, and I do have life too

Dear @ErmesT Thanks for your interest. I didn’t meet him because he has died a long ago.

Oh I see Mr. Sanjay @SanjayBDLG . Sorry about that :slightly_frowning_face:

Ermes tell me always that I have to check the reference, but my first thought was “How beautiful to know a so famous scientist”.

But in any case you looks well motivated, and for sure you have a lot of biodiversity in your country. Do you have some Biodiversity park like the one @Kumaarsantosh shared with us?

Really a great idea to introduce different topics in the simplest level possible… Thanks, dear friend @ErmesT Ji for your unique subject.

Of course, I too shall try, once my travel is completed.

Best wishes, Ji…

@ErmesT Buonasera,
