First Post - Japan Food

Hello, everybody! :grinning:

My name is Gustavo Menteguiaga, I live in Argentina and I consider myself a travel enthusiast. Like all of us here, I like to get to know new countries, their culture, landscapes and customs, food and lifestyle. :earth_americas:

This is my first post in the community of local guides, I hope you like it and I’ll be polishing the writing and format as I get into this forum with the help of your advice. I will also tell you a little bit about me and my experiences along the posts.

In this occasion I decided to comment my experience with some of the meals I tasted in Japan :japan: in my 2018 trip. My stay was 3 weeks

Without further ado, I leave you my photos and comments:

  • Name: Gusto (ガスト 台東根岸店) :shallow_pan_of_food:
  • Address: 4 Chome-16-25 Negishi, Taito City, Tokyo 110-0003, Japan :japan:

This was the first local restaurant I tried as it was just a few blocks from where I was staying. As soon as I left in the morning to go around the area, this place caught my attention, I hadn’t seen it beforehand but as I had already gone some blocks and it was 9 am, hunger invited me to come in.

It is a warm place, with several tables and a structure similar to a fast food restaurant.

The menu is almost 100% in Japanese, except for some key words in English. I didn’t get the feeling that this place attracts a lot of tourists since I saw it more of a local type, in the same way I didn’t have any problem ordering since the universal sign language solves some basic issues hehe.

I asked for a coffee (which you have to go and serve on the side) and a dish that at first seemed like cornmeal, but in reality was like a kind of mashed rice, with cheese and a very light sauce. In my country you don’t usually do this kind of combination at breakfast time, but because I was in Japan, I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to do something different.

To my surprise, it was a very tasty dish and I didn’t fall down at all afterwards. The attention was quite correct and the prices were cheap (I think I spent about 500 yen) :yen:

Let’s get on with it!

  • Name: Warayakiya Roppongi :shallow_pan_of_food:
  • Address: Japan, 〒106-0032 Tokyo, Minato City, Roppongi, 6 Chome-8-8 六本木ゴーディビル 1F :japan:

In this case I visited a Japanese grill because I wanted to try the meat, I found it by tripadvisor and the truth was a great success. It is usually quite busy so I had to wait that 20 minutes before entering. There are all kinds of meat (even horse) and quite a few smoked ones. The recommended ones are also fish.

The place is cozy, but you can enjoy your food without problems.

The attention is very good and while you wait sitting down, you can watch the chefs cooking and throwing some flames from the grill.

I ordered a Hachikin Chicken (I think that’s the translation) with a beer and for dessert an ice cream :ice_cream: (very good presentation).

The prices are intermediate, it’s worth the visit.

  • Name: Nagataya :shallow_pan_of_food:
  • Address: Japan, 〒730-0051 Hiroshima, Naka Ward, Otemachi, 1 Chome-7-19 重石ビル 1F :japan:

During my day in Hiroshima, I decided to go to one of the best places where they prepare Okonomiyaki (according to reviews on the internet), it’s just meters away from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. It is advisable to go with time because it is usually full, I went only wait 15 minutes and I could sit at the bar where they prepare the dish, the truth was an excellent experience.

There are 5 or more cooks that prepare the dishes in quantity and at a pace that can only be obtained with a lot of practice and professionalism. Okonomiyaki is cooked on a griddle from flour dough, water, cabbage and egg. It is usually served with green onions (in my case), sauces, meat, etc. There are many different ways to use it. Sometimes it is known as the “Japanese omelet”

Without a doubt, it’s one of the best dishes I’ve tasted in my entire stay in Japan, even though it was something completely new, I don’t dislike it at all and it doesn’t fall heavy either.

The attention was good, as it is a quite busy place capable of not being so “personalized” but I don’t usually get fussy in those aspects unless I have a bad experience in the treatment/attention.

I leave you some pictures of the preparation:

Well, this was my first post. As I said, I spent 3 weeks in Japan so I have more to share. I’m sure it will be uploading more in the next few days. Thanks for reading and I accept any suggestion and/or correction to my post!

Cheers!
Gustavo.

Thanks @RadieN !! It was my first trip to Japan and it was a mind blowing experience. I grow up with many Japanese influences so it was a really easy choice also I found a very cheap flight back in those days so it was one shot opportunity. I am planning to visit back in 2022

Thanks for the suggestion, I will introduce myself in that thread.

Best,

Gustavo.

Thank you so much, Gustavo, for introducing that Japenese breakfast option. In 2013, when I was in Tokyo, I didn’t bumped into a place where I would have gotten it. Otherwise, how can I know

@gmenteguiaga

Congratulations on your first post.

I think it’s advanced to use gust when traveling to Japan.
You also seemed to have enjoyed a Yakiniku restaurant in Roppongi, Tokyo and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki in Hiroshima.
In Japan, there are many delicious dishes in local areas!

All of this looks so delicious and such a great post. Now to talk my husband into traveling to Japan. He’s hesitant because we don’t speak Japanese.
