First of May, first day of fiestas in Córdoba

The first of May is the beginning of street revelries, party all night long celebrations, flower-filled patios or courtyards and the much awaited and revered May Fair.

Today starts the ‘cruces’ or ‘crosses’ where practically every square is adorned with a cross of flowers and an improvised and temporary “bar”, where one can order food, wine and other drinks. This popular event lasts for almost a week. People go and visit the crosses to socialize. They usually do ‘bar-hopping’ (going from one cross to another) with friends and sometimes with family (yes, kids also enjoy this but they are not allowed alcoholic drinks). The ‘bars’ open from noon until the wee hours of the morning. Most of these bars are run by cofradías (brotherhoods that are responsible for the processions in Holy Week) to raise money for their projects like the processions.

Now, I’m ready for the short visit to these crosses, who would like to come with me?
