FINDING SLEEPING BEAUTIES NEARBY MAKASSAR CITY
(presented for Google Connect Live 2019)
“The world is like a book, and those who don’t travel read only a page” (anonym).
At first, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Sukmaji, I live in Makassar city, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. I work for Pos Indonesia, a state-owned company on postal services, like USPS in America. While working, I frequently visited many places especially around Sulawesi (Celebes), Java and Maluku island. It’s a great experience for me because when I was doing my job, I can see new places, new people dan taste new cuisine at the same time. As a result, now I know how the province or district capital like, how friendly the people are and how tasty their cuisine is. It’s wonderful and I am grateful.
During my tour of duty, I was always excited when I saw the beauty of the nature all along the way I passed. The mountain, the sea, the valley, the beach and even the cloud in the blue sky at certain moment look so beautiful, and I think it’s a pitty if I don’t shoot them by my camera.
At my spare time, sometimes I look up all my photos collected during my journey, and I think it will be great if I can share my joy and happiness to everyone through the amazing application namely Google Maps. It seems that I get double happiness whenever I share my great photos on Google Maps because I hope there will be at least two impacts from my photos that shared.
The first impact I hope is that my sharing will helpful for everyone especially who are searching for great tourism destinations in my country especially Makassar city where I live now, and the second impat I hope is that my sharing will promote the places to people all over the world, that will make the places more famous and exciting to visit.
By the way, since I join Local Guide, I get new motto in my life : Sharing is helping, sharing is promoting.
When you are in Makassar for holiday or on duty and you need to refresh your exhausted heart and mind, I would like to let you know that there are many interesting tourism destinations nearby Makassar which still look so natural, such as Akarena beach, Samalona island and Ramang-ramang . They are all worth visiting.
Now let’s talk about them one by one :
- Akarena beach
Akarena Beach is located not so far from Makassar city, it’s only about 3 or 4 kilometres from the central city of Makassar.
The best time to visit the place is when the sun is rising or when the twilight is coming. When you come in the morning, the beach is so cool and not so crowded, so you can enjoy swimming in no-wave beach. When you feel hungry, you just ask the waiter who will offer you anykind of food and drink that will heal your hunger and thirsty.
You need to wash off your body after swimming ?
Of course you can wash off your body after swimming, because it provides bathroom near the beach. So, you can go home in real refresh condition.
Here is a photo of the location.
2. Samalona island
Samalona is one of the island nearby Makassar which we can reach by boat within less than one hour from Makassar. The island is surrounded by white sand and incredible clear water that will make you passionated to swim and snorkeling.
But due to limited accommodation there, you would better bring all favourite food or drink from Makassar. But it doesn’t mean that the place is still so primitive. Traditional food, snack or drink are available there.
It is recommended for family gathering who will hold out door programe
Here are some photos of Samalona island.
Ready to swim ? When you reach the island, I’m sure that you can’t bear swimming after finding that the water is so clear and clean beside the beautiful coral. Trust me…!
Here is the photo !
If you are curious about how large the island is, you can hike around it. You will just need about twenty minutes to get to the point where you started. Yes, it’s not a big island but excotic and beautiful.
Well, since we have finished swimming and hiking, it’s time to talk about meal, an important element in every journey. As I have said before, that the accommodation is limited in the island, so, you will find only snack like fried banana, while your lunch will be served in nature atmosphere. The menu will be sea food especially many kinds of fish that cooked traditionally.
By the way, time goes by so fast and now it’s time to go back to Makkassar city. Before leaving, make sure that you’ve taken some pictures of the island as a prove that you’ve been there like the group photo below.
- Ramang-ramang Geo Tourism

Before entering the main location, the visitors will be carried out by the guide using a boat through the river connecting to main location. It will need about ten minutes to the main location.
