Finding gold in perceived garbage!

Hi guys! First time contributor please take it easy on me! The title I hoped would give pause for thinking!

Before that let’s give the briefest of introductions! I live in a small “city” in the middle of Saskatchewan! Yes, it’s cold, it’s got lots of bugs and a lot of fields where you can see forever! But it also has dozens of lakes within driving distance, forests, hiking, wildlife and even a bunch of interesting history to the city itself!

I am a member of the historical society, I like drinking craft beer (which there is none of here! I’m a mod on a reddit page dedicated to beer in our province too!) and I love eating! I travel to eat!

I’m half Singaporean so I was brought up with a food culture that differed from my friends or anyone else that I knew!

I’m not originally from Prince Albert!

Actually, while growing up (and still today), Prince Albert has had a pretty rotten reputation. It’s known for being rough. In the collective mind of everyone not from Prince Albert it’s thought of as the last bastion of McDonalds or Tim Hortons before you go to the lakes!

This is where I go wrong.

I thought the same thing!

After moving here I spent years not learning anything about the city, not knowing how to get around, not knowing landmarks. Because I was in denial of living in such a place.

One day I was talking to my, also import, coworkers and I realized all we ever do is talk bad things about the city and I wanted to make a change of that. There must be things here that we can do!

I kept complaining about there being nothing to do without actually seeing if there was stuff to do! So I decided instead of fighting this place let’s get to enjoy it.

So that became the start of when I was going to start taking in any events that I could. Around this same time came in the existence of local guides. I started reviewing places, especially focusing on Non-chain, ma and pa stores that I thought deserved recognition. If maybe I could give them a glowing review maybe people would see this and they could enjoy this city as much as I can.

This is not to say that the city isn’t rough, it’s got some pretty scary areas, but I think many places do.

If all we do is keep complaining about how bad it is, how is it going to get better?

I hope I can continue reviewing and trying to act as a sort of ambassador to my city and especially the newcomers to the city.

I try and be active on reddit helping anyone with questions (and often asking questions) and offer help whenever needed.

I didn’t, for the life of me, expect to be living here but I think it’s really easy to dwell on negatives and it’s much harder to focus on the positives but if you actively look for the good you’re going to find it.

Please enjoy the map I made as well about local eateries and great options. Thank you for humoring me along the way!
