Here are some information on history of FIFA World Cups.
Summary Facts about World Cup
- The FIFA World Cup was first played in 1930 in Uruguay.
- So far 80 Countries have participated in Various World Cups. Qatar is 80th Country.
- It is the world’s most popular sporting event.
- The famed soccer tournament, which takes place every four years, features over 200 countries vying to win the World Cup Trophy.
- Brazil has played in all 20 tournaments, and has won five.
- Pelé, of Brazil, is the player with the most World Cup wins.
- Germany has played the most World Cup matches and scored the most goals.
- Host Country has won 6 of 20 world cups
- Miroslav Klose leads the goal count with 16 goals in his World Cup career.
- France’s Just Fontaine is the tournament’s highest scorer with 13 goals in one tournament.
- To date, only eight countries have ever won the World Cup, though there have been 20 tournaments. These victorious countries are all from Europe or South America: Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, France, England and Spain.
- In 2002, the World Cup was finally held in Asia. The year also saw the first time the World Cup had two hosts – South Korea and Japan
- Eight years later in 2010, South Africa became the first African nation to host the World Cup, famously bringing the noisy vuvuzela to the world’s attention.
- Brazil is one of only two countries to have won consecutive titles. Italy is the other country to hold this sporting honor.
- A powerhouse of soccer might, and home to both Ronaldo and Pelé, Brazil has won the World Cup a staggering five Times. World Cup facts show the nation’s first win came in 1958 and was quickly followed by another in 1962. Pelé helped bring home another trophy in 1970, and Brazil racked up two more wins in 1994 and 2002.
- Just Fontaine Holds Record for Most Goals in a Single Tournament Though he may be the player with the fourth most World Cup goals in history, France’s Just Fontaine has a greater claim to fame. The 13 goals placed him at number four were all scored in one World Cup. Just Fontaine maintains the record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup tournament and has held on to that title since 1958, when he led France to a third place finish in the World Cup.
- A country has never won the World Cup with a foreign manager.
- A first-winter World Cup will be held for the first time in 2022 in Qatar. Every other host country has held the tournament in the summer months.
- Among Qatar’s infrastructure projects are the construction of stadiums, highways, and hotels. The country is spending a staggering $200 billion on these projects. This will be the most expensive World Cup.
- Qatar is the smallest nation to host the World Cup ever, with only 4,416 square miles and 0.12 percent of the size of the United States.
- There are only eight stadiums being utilized for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. This is the lowest number of stadiums for the World Cup since the 1978 edition in the host country of Argentina. They only used six stadiums.
- Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in fully air-conditioned stadiums for the first time ever.
- 6 Awards Are Given to World Cup Players
- The best player award is called the Golden Ball. Its recipient is determined by a vote of media members. A Silver and a Bronze Ball are awarded to the second and third place players, respectively.
- The Golden Boot is awarded to the top goal scorer of the tournament. The Silver and Bronze Boot go to the second and third scorers respectively.
- The FIFA Technical Study Group determines the best goalie of the World Cup and awards them the Golden Glove Award.
- They also give the Best Young Player Award to the best footballer aged 21 or younger.
- Those red cards count against you if you’re aiming to win the FIFA Fair Play Trophy. Awarded by the FIFA Fair Play Committee, the trophy goes to the team with the best record of fair play based on the point system.
- Not to be left out, the general public has the opportunity to choose the Most Entertaining Team award recipient.- Most followed FIFA World cup player on Twitter

Rules of the Game
- “Soccer is contested 11-on-11. Two teams try to score goals on the opponent’s net.
- Matches last 90 minutes, split into two 45-minute halves. Each team has 10 outfield players who may not play the ball with any part of their arms or hands, and one goalkeeper
- Unlike most American sports, it’s a running clock, and it counts up toward 90, rather than down from 90. At the end of each half, the referee will add on stoppage time, a rough estimate to account for delays.
- Boundaries: Like in baseball, field sizes can vary. All you need to know is that if the ball crosses over the sideline – whether in the air or on the ground – the team who did not touch it last restarts play with an overhead, two-handed throw-in. If it crosses the endline off the attacking team, the defending team’s goalkeeper puts it back into play with a goal kick – a free kick from his own goalmouth. If it crosses the endline off the defending team, it’s a corner kick – literally a free kick from the corner of the field.
- At the 2022 World Cup, yellow cards do carry over from the group stage into the Round of 16. If a player receives one yellow card in the group stage and another in the Round of 16, they are ineligible for their team’s quarterfinal matchup. However, there is a “clean slate” from the quarterfinals into the semifinals where all previous cautions are wiped, so no players in the semifinals will be at risk of missing the final matches due to accumulated yellow cards from earlier in the tournament.
- FIFA have confirmed teams will be allowed to make up to five substitutions per game at the 2022 World Cup. Previous World Cups only permitted three substitutions so the change for Qatar is quite significant.
- 2022 world cup tournament is set to be the last with 32 participating teams, with the field to increase to 48 teams for the 2026 edition”
