[Feature Request] How great this would be ? A map showing all our contributions!

Dear Moderators and Googlers,

As dedicated Local Guides, we invest significant time and effort in enriching Google Maps with valuable contributions like reviews, place additions, road updates, photos/videos, and answers to business-related questions.

While the ‘Contribute’ tab within the Google Maps app provides a categorized list of these contributions, it currently lacks a visual, map-based representation.

Many of us are familiar with the Google Maps Timeline feature, which brilliantly displays our visited locations over a chosen period. As below screenshot,

This begs the question: Is there any existing (or planned) functionality within our Google Maps profile that offers a map view of our Local Guide contributions?

Imagine being able to see at a glance all the places where we’ve left reviews, added new businesses, helped improve road networks, shared visual content, and answered community questions, all plotted directly on a map.

Currently, accessing this information requires navigating through separate lists for each contribution type. A unified map view would offer a powerful and intuitive way to understand the geographical impact of our collective contributions.

Why a Map View for Local Guide Contributions Would Be Incredibly Helpful:

This feature would bring numerous benefits to the Local Guides community:

  • Visualizing Impact and Pride: Seeing our contributions spatially would provide a powerful visual representation of our impact on the map. It would foster a greater sense of accomplishment and pride in our efforts.

  • Identifying Areas of Contribution: A map view could help us easily identify areas where we’ve contributed heavily and areas where our input might be lacking. This could motivate us to focus our efforts in new or underserved locations.

  • Strategic Contribution Planning: By visualizing past contributions, Local Guides could strategically plan future contributions. For example, someone might notice they haven’t reviewed many businesses in a particular neighborhood they frequent.

  • Community Building and Collaboration: This feature could potentially foster collaboration among Local Guides in specific geographic areas. Seeing each other’s contributions on a map could spark discussions and joint efforts to improve local listings.

  • Personalized Insights and Analytics: A map view could serve as a foundation for more advanced personalized insights into our contribution patterns. For example, it could show the density of our contributions in different areas or the types of contributions we make most frequently in certain regions.

  • Gamification and Engagement: The visual nature of a map could add a layer of gamification and further engagement with the Local Guides program. Seeing our “footprint” grow on the map could be highly motivating.

  • Showcasing Our Contributions: A visual map of contributions could be a compelling way for Local Guides to showcase their efforts to friends, family, or even potential collaborators.

In essence, a map view of our Local Guide contributions would transform our understanding of our impact from a series of lists into a tangible, geographical narrative. We believe this feature would significantly enhance the Local Guides experience and further empower us to improve Google Maps for everyone.

Heyy! That’s a really good idea. I am always inspired to work for maps and local guide community when they acknowledge our work and present it in a beautiful way.
@NareshDarji I request you to discuss this with the Google maps leaders!

Yes, i believe it should be there @Kush2411 .
If not, then implemented ASAP. May be Googlers can reply on this with any fruitful solution.

I love the idea. Mind if I build on it? What if they had a “Guide” app that showed you this data easily? Swarm (sorry) provides the mapping feature, and since they list your check-ins chronologically you kind of get a timeline feature. It’s also much easier to check in to locations. Considering that Swarm seems to be virtually dead, this would be a great spot for Google to fill in, make it easier for Guides to participate, and serve data back to Guides that is meaningful.

Thank you dear @JPE3 for liking this idea.

I hope so, such feature will be already existed or if Googlers like this idea, then it can be implemented too. @MoniDi

It’s a great idea if it can be included in Google Maps, it would simplify our contributions to Maps. Thank you for sharing this @NandKK

Hi all!

Thanks for this feature request @NandKK !

Are you aware that when you go to your Contribution page and click on Reviews, Photos, Edits or Answers category, a map loads up in the right pane and it basically maps out your contributions? See video below.

Some issues in its current form:

  • the pencil icon applies only the contributions loaded on the page. As you scroll down your list of contributions, more and more contributions are loaded and those are shown on the map
  • the mapping of contributions are only on one category at a time; it doesn’t show all contributions with different markers to indicate different type
  • as you zoom out, the map view switches from a flat view to a spherical globe view which is harder to see all your mapped contributions

Anyway, there is some mapping being done but appreciate from all the comments here and your original post, it doesn’t quite hit the mark!

Hi @AdrianLunsong

Thanks for clarifying this feature. While I appreciate the explanation, it doesn’t quite address the core issue for viewing all contributions efficiently.

The continuous updating of pencil marks as we scroll would indeed make it very time-consuming to reach our earliest contributions.

Wouldn’t a dedicated “complete contribution view” on the map be a more effective solution? This could potentially offer different layers or filters to visualize various types of contributions at a glance, rather than requiring endless scrolling.

Hi @NandKK,

Thank you for your idea.

Like your other topics, I’m removing the “In the news” tag from your topic as it is not used correctly in this case. The tag should be used if you have your story about your Local Guides or Google Maps achievements featured in any news outlets, local or online.

Using the right tags on your topics makes it a breeze for other Local Guides to find what they’re looking for in the community.

Hi @AngieYC

It seems I’ve been using the wrong tag in my posts—thank you for pointing that out :folded_hands: . I now understand what the “In the News” tag is intended for. I’ll definitely be more mindful going forward and make sure to use the appropriate tags. As for my past posts, I’ll try to go through them and make corrections where needed. Thanks again for your guidance—I truly appreciate it.
