Falafel Sandwich: Famous Street Food in Middle East

Falafel sandwich is one of the favorite street foods in the Middle East. The sandwich is basically made of fried chickpea patties (Falafel: A mixture of ground spiced chickpeas or fava beans that is shaped into balls and deep-fried) stuffed in a pita bread along with the tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, pickles, and some creamy tahini. The shaping of falafel is done with traditional falafel spoons which are available in almost all Middle Eastern grocery stores. The word falafel is derived from Aramaic (Language spoken in the ancient region of Syria) “pilpal” literal meaning small round thing. Egypt takes the credit for conceiving the recipe of falafel and is considered as national dish in some countries (Egypt, Palestine, Israel).

Falafel sandwich is available in many local restaurants in my neighborhood. During the religious holidays, families cook this delicacy at home and eat it with their loved ones. Jordan holds the record for preparing the World’s largest falafel (~101 kg), this incredible feat was achieved by Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa (Jordan) on 31 May 2019. The following are the local restaurants which are famous for preparing delicious Falafel sandwich in my region:

Fun fact about Falafel: There was a dispute between the countries (Lebanon and Israel) regarding the origin of Falafel. The Lebanese Industrialists Association claims that the other country (Israel) was advertising and marketing the traditional authentic food of Lebanon as their own. They requested the WTO and European parliament to grant their country the sole right to produce and market the Falafel.

Hi @fasi6083

Thanks for sharing about Falafel.

I like Pita Bread, but I’ve never tried the one with Falafel as the filling. Is it a good choice for vegetarian?

Tagging my friend @OSAMA_1 . Do you know about the World’s largest Falafel by Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa, Jordan as @fasi6083 mentioned above?

Thanks for the comment @Velvel Yes indeed, Falafel sandwich is made of chickpea patty (perfect substitute for chicken used in burgers) which is why most vegetarians opt for this dish. The only downside of falafel in my opinion is that the patties are deep oil fried and may contain high amount of saturated fats.

Hello friends and fellows @fasi6083

@Velvel

@MAHBUB_HYDER , Well , Falafel is now very renowned across countries wherever. This delicious piece is become a celebrity , haha? or maybe more. Wherever you travel in this planet, you can find it. And yes about Dead Sea Spa they did it lool. I would like to add little bit talk to my friend @fasi6083 , that Falafel is Originally a restaurant sandwich before it became a Street food from long time ago specially in Palestine , Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. In Egypt, they have it little different in ingredients and size, but it’s almost the same flavor. Why is it a Street food sometimes ? A poor people find their living payment by selling Falafel Sandwich in the street to many from.the public. They knew the Falafel Sandwich never been a looser. It gets a good deal of money per a day. So they sell it in the Streets, though it’s still inside restaurants. Now Falafel also can be cooked in our houses and we did it many times during the look down.

Here is one of my old posts about Falafel lool .

You’re welcome, my friend @OSAMA_1

I would also thank you to add more story about Falafel.

It’s quite unique because usually a food started from the street food then becomes very famous until it is also served in the restaurant. However, Falafel is different. It came first from a sandwich restaurant.

So great to know about it and I hope to try Falafel someday :smiley:

Let’s move to @OSAMA_1 's post about Falafel!
